Hull's no 'dump' and City of Culture title CAN be ours
CIVIC leaders in Hull are in buoyant mood over the city's chances of becoming the 2017 City of Culture.
Last week, the city was confirmed among ten others in contention by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
-

POPULAR: David Hockney's Bigger Trees Near Warter exhibition at Ferens Art Gallery.
But the first blows were landed last week when the Conservative MP for rival Southend-on-Sea David Amess, claimed some of those who put in a bid were "absolute dumps" and "wouldn't know culture if it was put in front of them".
Hull councillors, though, insist everything is in place for a strong challenge.

Portfolio holder for culture, Terry Geraghty, said: "We have a situation where, last year, we had the Da Vinci and Hockney exhibitions, while the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra said Hull had one of the best venues it had played in.
"We have also had many sporting events, including athletics, boxing and table tennis.
"There is a lot going for this city and we are very confident."
Councillor Geraghty also reacted angrily to the comments by Mr Amess, although the MP has since tried to distance himself from them.
"It's absolutely disgraceful that someone representing the people can say something like this about places in the country," said Cllr Geraghty.
"It shows he is stuck in his little closet in the House of Commons.
"There is a lot of competition and we always new it was going to be tough.
"All the candidates have their different attractions but we feel we have enough to win."
Councillor Steve Bayes, Hull's portfolio holder for economic regeneration and employment, is providing the political lead on Hull's bid. He said: "We are the only place in Yorkshire competing and the most northern city in England.
"All the cities have their strengths and weaknesses but we have every chance.
"What we won't do is get into a slagging match with other places."

“Once again, the HDM editors are absolutely abysmal at spelling - who employs these people??

“Hull's first impressions, being Hull born and bred but like many people having to cast my net far and wide for employment over the last 20yrs following capper pass closure. I now live over the water following a spell working at Barton/Scunthorpe and now back in Hull. Travelling everyday into the City is sole destroying. The quality of all our arterial roads is appalling, CS Way, Bootferry Road, Anlaby Road, Willerby Road even the new link to Beverley the road after the bridge roundabout is disgusting. So whoever comes here to open a business must wonder what the hell they are letting themselves in for. It is depressing travelling in here even Scunthorpe (town) has a 4 lane carriageway on entering (does it get the same volume of traffic I hear you say) It is the main link to TaTa steel andthe 38tonners are high in volume. No matter what we say Hull is a poor mans city and no matter how proud we are the people who run it do not seem to understand that infrastructure is vital to getting the best from a Cityand we fall well short on this evidence.”

“Culture is Class and Class is something HULL will never have. Filthy streets, potholed badly marked roads, grafitti, boarded up eyesores everywhere, litter, dog muck, tatty buildings, disgusting transport interchange. Come out of Hull station and the pavements are stained and dirty, fag ends everywhere, smell of urine. What does that say to visitors?
If the council ever bother cleaning Hull up, maybe it will score 5/20, but they haven't bothered before so why would they bother now?”

“Did this MP actually name Hull in his remarks? Or are we (me included), getting paranoid he 'meant Hull' when he said what he did? If so we are being the architect of our own demise by jumping to conclusions.
How about Our Hull MP's buttonholing this MP in a dark corner of Westminster and get him to nail his colours to the mast. Diana Johnson and Alan Johnson could lay into him verbally and Karl Tirne could chew his ankles.”

“Councillors are job-bound to vaunt Hull, but no-ones seriously kidding themself that Hull is a cultural gem.It has some fine tourist sites fair enough, but so has every major town in the UK.
Cities applying need that extra special factor,Hull hasnt got that-we have major roads named after rugby players, not scientists, philosophers, philanthropists, charity workers, world changing politicians (dont get us started on Prescott and the coven of three) or Nobel peace prize winners.Awkward but true.”

“The culture of Hull is not just about a series of one-off events, it's about what drives the city from day to day; something in the way its people think and the quality of life they generate for themselves as well as improving their lifestyles. Using their heritage in all its forms to make the city buzz and other people really want to come here. Clutching at cultural straws such as the Hockney connection is pathetic. Bridlington has a more legitimate claim to him than Hull. Instant culture is a non-starter.”

"@stantheman
I totally agree with your first two comments but.......
Steady on geezer. Football top flight is the Premiership; Rugby League top flight is the Super League. No back handed compliment (or compliment at all), just a fact. We have two RL teams in the Super League and hopefully Hull City will get into the Premiership. Just a fact.
Hull City could use some defencive tips at the minute; fire them that way not this."
Actually, the Premiership is the top flight of rugby union, the full version of rugby and which gets more crowds per game then RL, as does their internationals. The top flight of football is the Premier League.
And having 2 teams in the Super League is no big deal. It doesn't bring a fraction of the publicity having a Premier League club does.”

“Well, Hull Could have had a 36,000 KC Stadium and a Brand new state of the Art sports Village with the area regenerated....
That could have swung the Vote in our favour....
BUT SAID COUNCIL WANTED A SCRUFFY EYESORE CAR PARK ON WALTON STREET.
Once people see the state of the car park no one will vote for Hull as The City of Culture.
Big own goal by the Council.”

“Perhaps Cllr Geraghty should read the small print on the terms and conditions of the bid;
"Culture is generally taken to include the following areas: arts (including visual arts, literature, music, theatre and dance), architecture, crafts, creative industries, design, heritage, historic environment, museums and galleries, libraries, archives, film, broadcasting and media. We would expect to see a range of these areas included in bids and cultural programmes. In addition, you may also choose to include sport and science, BUT these should not be major elements of your bid and programme"
As for stanthemans comments John God!ber did nothing for this city apart from stifle local writers to further enhance his own reputation with all that 3rd most performed palywright nonsense. Anyone can achieve that if it was mainly his plays that were commissioned and mainly his plays that went on tour. His ego has cost the city 16 million quid in a building that was way to big for the audience. Remember the God!ber performances that were pulled because of lack of interest and did anyone go to opening night and see God!bers 'Funny Turns'. He stormed out straight after when virtually nobody kissed his 'proverbial'
As for defending the culture bid this time round.....Cuckoo!”
