A fresh attempt is being made to secure Government cash to help revitalise Hull city centre.

Hull has twice missed out on funding from an Whitehall initiative being spearheaded by retail expert Mary Portas in recent months.

Now, Hull City Council is bidding to win funding under a new Town Team project aimed at providing a further boost to struggling town and city centres.

Launching the scheme, local growth minister Mark Prisk said: "There's a real hunger in town centres across the country for them to be revitalised and remain attractive places to visit.

“years free rates if no profit made ,or profit based ,it would help generate ecconomy , failing that shut the edge of town centres and concentrate on town centre , then the profit hungry wardens can go ticket mad , and reach there daily quota of misery”

“How much would it cost to put the open market back where it belongs and charge very low rents for the first few months? That would bring life back to the covered market (given similarly low rents) and to the whole of that end of the town. It's not really money that's required, just imagination and common sense.”

“Why not have free parking if you spend say £5 in local shops. They have this system for example at Salford Quays. Simply purchase items within the centre and have parking ticket validated for free exit. Cant believe it`s beyond the powers that be to see that cost of/availability /common sense enforcement of parking has a direct effect on peoples perception of a place as wanting to do business and make people welcome. This city particular seems to alienate anyone wanting to come and spend money or to make a go of a small business, which we are told are the life blood of a vibrant regional economy. Get the traffic management (?) and parking sorted and we can again become a place worth visiting.
Whilst on the subject of parking- there must be a better system for collecting parking fees at Princess quay . At peak times (eg after a concert at city hall or when cinema kicks out) their is a huge queue to collect £1 each from the machines. Is there not a better way- eg validating ticket at venue rather than collecting cash later- it cant be rocket science to co-ordinate and make user friendly.”
