PASSENGERS will be able to take advantage of a new hotel at Humberside Airport if officials are given the go ahead for the scheme.

Bosses at the Kirmington-based airport have submitted a planning application to build an on-site 100-room venue.

The hotel would mainly cater for airport staff and oil rig workers.

If the application is successful, the building would stand for a temporary period of five years to gauge whether a need exists for a permanent accommodation facility at the airport.

Humberside Airport director, Tony Lavan, said: "This exciting development is a major boost for Humberside Airport. The airport has a diverse business offering, which not only consists of commercial scheduled, international scheduled and package holiday flights, but also a successful offshore business as well.

"As a major airport based heliport, which takes oil workers to and from offshore locations in the North Sea as part of the resurgence in oil and gas exploration, the offshore industry has always been important to the airport."

"We are delighted these industries, along with our airline partners, will soon benefit from a new dedicated on-site hotel."

Mr Lavan said he could not divulge the cost of the development due to commercial sensitivities.

The need for a hotel has been identified due to the number of workers flying to offshore rigs from Humberside, which has the second biggest heliport in the country.

Many of those workers commute to non-residential rigs and currently face journeys to and from Hull for suitable overnight accommodation.

In addition to the bedrooms, the hotel would also include a restaurant, recreation room and conference facilities, with new jobs to cover the full range of positions.

If permission for the hotel is granted by North Lincolnshire Council, the building would be sited on an unused area of land next to the business park, adjacent to the main airport entrance from the A18.

Once built, it would be operated by the Nightel company.

Comments on the proposals are welcome to be submitted to North Lincolnshire Council until March 29.

Council planning officers will then decide whether the project can go ahead, with a target date of May 31 set for a decision to be made by.

“john, anlaby: I totaly agree with you. Hopefuly the new routes from the low cost operator Flybe shows that airlines are willing to dip their toes in the water. I fully believe that we will see more expansion from summer 2011 onwards. I agree, Doncaster is ok but think about it, it still takes around an hour to get there. Hull, Grimsby,, Scunthorpe and Lincoln all have an excellent airport, well within a 30 minute drive in the most case, that has been under utilized for some years, i also fully believe that airlines will begin to realise this now that there is heightened competition from Doncaster. There is nothing better than landing from a holiday and knowing you are already home without having a long motorway journey ahead of you etc...”

“Thanks John. Next time my feet are pressing pretend brakes to help the pilot, I will try and relax that clenching muscle reflex.
Not too much though, just in case it relaxes completely......”
