Humberside Police axes mounted section
Humberside Police's mounted section is being axed as the force battles to meet budget cuts.
The unit, made up of six horses based in Walkington, will be disbanded next year.
Chief Constable Tim Hollis said the decision to scrap the mounted section will save £500,000 a year.
He said: "I realise the public and many officers, serving and retired, will regret the loss of a mounted section which has been an integral part of policing across Humberside for so many years.

"Personally, I share that sadness but we are in a period when sentiment has come up against austerity and hard decisions must be made."

“Mr Hollis cannot do sums, 7 police horses do not cost £500k per year in fact they would cost no more than £20k, I challenge any member of the Police force to prove me wrong by calling 01482 880807, we are also starting a petition if you wish to sign it please call in to Trophy Pet Food,”

“And I agree get rid of these unwanted police commissioners - and their hangers on, that would save a few quid. What can they do that wasn't done already? Waste of taxpayers money..”

“I just find it incredible that the Government even considers cutting the police budget, was that in their manifesto? Common sense says if the population is rising we need more police, not less. Why are budgets for the police and armed forces and anything practical in the public sector always sneakily cut, while foreign aid and other 'jollies' for the liberal political elite are taboo subjects and we are put down when we challenge how OUR money is spent.
Whatever the rights and wrongs of the mounted section I thank our police (and all essential services) for doing a very difficult job. A return to common sense and stop using the police as cash collectors would be far better than this.”

“This saving will be poured down the drain, or allow the self deluded to employ an assistant, assistant, plus an assistant chief constable.........”

“Toby, Millwall fans rioted in the stadium unhindered by police, mounted or on foot, ripping up seats and throwing them at City fans. Not one single Millwall fan was arrested so can you tell us what you saw the police horses doing? Or the police come to that.”

“A water cannon would be far cheaper and would leak less than a horse. Didn't I notice a new Police Horse Box recently? Whats the story there?
Why don't they stop the ridiculous practice of requiring Plod to wash his own patrol car? Thereby giving them another hour at the end of their shift for paperwork and email responses?
Tim Hollis has been used to deliver the bad news as he is on his way out. Very simple. They wouldn't want gottleagear to have to do it on her first day, would they?”

“I think for all you people who don't know the facts will find that as with many things in the police force at the moment the mounted are amalgamating with the other three Yorkshire forces to have one centre for all the mounted sections, something that should have happened long ago. The horses serve their purpose for many things having seen them on numerous occasions but now an expensive commodity in times of austerity. As for no good at the ill fated Millwall game the poster must not have seen what I did as I thought they were excellent.”

“Hollis no doubt wanted a last dig before bye bye. Cutting off his nose to spite our faces, nice one. As professional as the coppers getting nicked down south for similar shining professional standards.”

“Can they not be more pro-active and axe their mobile speed camera patrols at the same time. I wouldn't mind if they were in important places like outside schools but they never are. They sit in industrial areas and places where there are little or no accidents. A cash register in a police car me thinks.”
