Hull UFO Society believes a low-flying military plane was responsible for creating a "humming" noise heard during the early hours of the morning.

Dozens of Mail readers have revealed they heard the mysterious noise at about 2am today.

The Ministry of Defence insists no military aircraft were in the vicinity at the time.

But Sean Tierney, chairman of Hull UFO Society – formed in 1997 – said: "I have heard a similar sound before. To me, it sounded very much like a military transport aircraft.

"The MoD won't always confirm – they don't always want everyone knowing what they're doing."

Haydn Woods, who has been following the discussion on our Facebook page, sent us this sound clip of the humming noise, captured on his CCTV system.

Mr Woods said he first heard what sounded like quite a loud plane at around 2am.

He added: "When I opened the bedroom window it scared me and was really loud. It was like a fleet of old massive propeller bomber planes.

"My CCTV only recorded the noise quietly like a normal plane, which is really weird."

“Mystery solved. It was a Ukranian civilian transport aircraft from the Soviet era.

Antonov 12, serial UR-CBF, was in the UK during that period. An-12s fly in now and again on night freight

The Antonov 12 is a Ukranian designed aircraft from the Soviet era. A very noisy turbo-prop aircraft. The western equivilant is the Lockheed C-130 Hercules.

Noted on the following aircraft enthusiast website. The Antonov was noted later that morning transiting over Manchester and heading east over the Midlands.

Operated by Aerovis Airlines in the Ukraine

“Close but no cigar TJ, this was definitely not an Electra they have a sound signature similar to a Hercules and this was NOT a Hercules sound. And all the B52 theories are pants as well as this was not a jet sound, the theories still continue IMHO - Mavericks - A) point is the most valid to be honest.”

“Yea close but no cigar TJ, I have seen these seen and heard these Atlantic things at airshow's and these have a Hercules sound signature to them, this was too big a noise, and not choppy enough. The mystery still carries on as far as I'm concerned, and all the B-52 theories are pants as well as this was NOT a jet angine sound !”

“I realise this was a stealth bomber

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1064713/Russian-nuclear-bomber-flies-undetected-20-miles-Hull.html

but this got within 90 seconds of Hull.

Then the response someone got from the Civil Aviation Authority

"However, the following information explains the airspace structure above Kingston-upon-Hull and the rules and procedures that apply to aircraft operating within it.

The airspace above Kingston-upon-Hull is classed as Uncontrolled Airspace (UCAS). An aircraft can operate within UCAS without talking to Air Traffic Control (ATC) and without a specific ATC clearance; there is no requirement to file a flight plan and pilots can determine their routes according to their own requirements. I should add that UCAS is available to all civil users, e.g. light aircraft, helicopters, hot air balloons etc, and military aviation. Given the very nature of UCAS, it is extremely difficult to track and identify a single aircraft operating within it."

So i suppose unless a freight company comes forward and says one of their planes were in this area at the time we cannot say for certain if it was a lockheed or a tu 95.

If it was a russian bomber then the MoD would try keeping it under wraps.

A.) To save embarrassment, they are about to make cuts to the services and a russian plane enters British airspace undetected or unopposed.

B.) To save panic, if it was announced to the media, bread and tinned food would leave asda's shelves faster then peter andre did”

“Several B-52 American bombers were seen flying in tandem over Waxholme this morning, approximately 32000 feet.
Visible with telescope, as the wind direction was in favour, a loud hum was audible even at that height.

It is common to see aircraft flying late out here, as there is little or no light pollution. In the past, I have seen literally hundreds of aircraft in one go, and come out with my neighbours to look - the noise was deafening. One of them contacted Air Traffic Control at Kirmington- we really thought there was an invasion or something, it was very frightening, Kirmington said there was no record of anything at that time. So whose were they, or why can't we know?
    Baffling and unnerving.”

“Sounds like a Lockheed Electra. They are used for night time freight runs by Atlantic Airlines based in the UK.

    They are noisy beasts.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_ECu_-SOKo

I can see how people can jump to the Russian Tu-95 Bear conclusion, but not a chance. Everything in UK airspace is
tracked by Air Traffic Control. You can't just have unidentified aircraft operating in UK congested airspace.

The military claim of not on of ours is probably quite correct. This sounds very much like a civilian turbo prop at low level such as the Lockeed Electra.”
