Hundreds of riders and supporters gathered to take part in the Holderness Hunt's showcase meeting.

Wearing traditional red jackets and velvet hats, members of the hunt set off from Rise Park, near Skirlaugh.

Although hunting foxes with hounds is illegal, riders in East Yorkshire and across the country still take their horses and hounds out during the winter months.

Among more than 100 riders was Sarah Fuller, of Cherry Burton, who has taken part in the hunt for 10 years.

The 26-year-old said: "It is a great day out and one of our long-held traditions that we need to keep going.

"It is fantastic to be out in the countryside and to watch the hounds and horses working."

Legislation bans hunts from setting out with hounds to kill a fox, but they can get round the rules by following a synthetic trail, or using two hounds to flush out a fox that can then be shot.

The hounds ran for about 50 miles across the countryside during the meet, which was held on Saturday.

David Elliott, Holderness Hunt's professional huntsman, who is based at its kennels in Etton, near Beverley, said: "We work with the hounds every day and each one has its own personality and temperament.

"The hunt brings people together from both rural and urban areas.

"People have pulled together since the ban and we have seen a lot more coming out to support us."

“I am violently opposed to fox hunting or badger baiting, but have no problem with people, on horses who want to ride through the country side.

It is not offence to enjoy horse riding, the same as it is not wrong to take part in organised riding.

I would rather see them than a drunken sports crowd supporting their team on a Saturday”

“It's good that the ban has made people want to join the hunt now they cant kill the fox it proves it was the right thing to do, though i'd prefer a total ban”

“Toffs and their lackeys. Blair's half way house will never work. A full and complete BAN is what is needed for sports based on a blood lust.”
