HESSLE Sporting Hurricanes took the under-nines title at the annual Hull Boys League five-a-side competition at the Gemtec Arena in west Hull.

The Hessle team of Robert Fisk, Ben Adamson, Cameron Morfoot, Matthew Owen, Lochlan Beith, Tom Rogerson, Marcus Dewhurst and Joel Westoby came out on top in the 10-team tournament.

The Hurricanes were the under-nines group two champions in phase one of the league season and came up against group one winners Hessle Sporting Spitfires in their first pool match.

In a game played at a high tempo both keepers were kept busy, but goals either side of the break gave the Hurricanes a 2-0 win.

In game two, the Hessle side saw off North Cave 2-0, but they then came up against a fine Sproatley Juniors keeper as they lost game three 2-1.

Hurricanes then bounced back to beat Hessle Rangers 3-0.

Both Sproatley and the Hurricanes finished the group stages level on nine points, eight goals for and two goals against, so to decide who finished top of Group two they had to have a penalty shoot-out, which Hessle won 3-1.

In their semi-final against Westella & Willerby A, second-half sub Dewhurst scored the only goal of the game with a great effort from an acute angle.

This set up a final with Costello Rangers, who were the only team to have reached the final without losing any games or dropping any points.

But the Hurricanes came out of the blocks the fastest and cruised into a 3-0 lead at half time.

In the second half, Costello came out fighting and never gave up and got a much deserved consolation goal, but Hurricanes held on to take the title.

“Wonderful victory for the Hurricanes. Shame the picture shown here is of Hessle Rangers Juniors Under 9's.
Its like reporting on a Glasgow Celtic game and printing a picture of Glasgow Rangers”
