HOWDEN: A pioneering renewable energy passenger information system has been installed at the town's railway station.

The environmentally-friendly wind and solar-powered display board is the first of its kind on the UK railway network.

First Hull Trains stepped in with the ground-breaking system because there was a lack of information at the unmanned station.

Controlled from the train company's Hull offices, the unique system is powered by wind and solar energy with a battery back-up.

The information screens have been welcomed by passengers using Howden station.

EAST YORKS: Wildlife fans are in for a treat at a popular nature reserve.

Bird charity the RSPB is inviting people to an evening with barn owls at its Blacktoft Sands wildlife haven, near Goole. Evenings are the best time to view one of the UK's best-loved birds hunting for food over the reed beds.

Join the events on Thursday (adults only) and Friday, May 20 and 21, from 6pm to 9pm.

EAST YORKS: Train enthusiasts are invited to a gala at Bridlington railway station.

The event is being organised by the Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership on Saturday, May 29, from 10am to 4pm.

Family fun includes model railways, craft and charity stalls, and live entertainment.

A collection will be made in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust and Railways Children's Charity.
