Linking the historic Old Town to the East Bank, the new bridge will then be lifted into place by a crane-mounted barge during August.

After being commissioned, it is expected to open to the public in November.

As part of our Behind the Headlines feature in today's Mail, George Orton, managing director of main contractor Qualter Hall, said: "It is certainly going to be a very different-looking bridge from those that already cross the river.

"From our point of view, it has been an exciting project to work on."

See today's Mail for pictures of how the bridge is taking shape.

Don't you read your marvellous daily mail

“Bet this ends up like that dodgy millenium bridge or whatever in London which swayed in the wind and had to be reinforced,
And what happens when some large 1000 tone ship wants to go past.
Again I support the sceptics and especially Glenroy who consistently asks for remembrance of the fishing industry, which of course the lofty arty-farty university types despise. THey's sooner have ponsy toads than something for people who do a manual job, but in this snob-ridden society manual workers do not count, but ponsy poets do.”

“Peter, Hull, It about time someone pulled their finger out but it does not look like it will happen in the near future , which is a discrace ,the council want plastic toads scattered around the city for us to remember some Larkin bloke from out of town , I would like the council to erect a memorial to the thousands of men who worked and lost their lives on a cruel sea doing what must have been one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.”
