An Illustrious idea to attract visitors
IF there's one thing Hull University should be good at, it's original ideas.
And the suggestion by vice chancellor Calie Pistorius that Hull could become a permanent home to the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious is inspired.
Now let's be fair. At the moment this is very much a concept drawn on the back of an envelope. But like all great ideas, it immediately captures the attention and imagination.
Hull has a rich and proud seafaring heritage dating back to the late 18th century with the transformation of the city into a thriving port.

And even with the trade ships and fishing fleets gone, we still look east towards the North Sea for prosperity, this time in the form of giant offshore wind farms.
So the idea of finding a permanent dock for one of the Royal Navy's famous carriers fits with both the heritage of this city and its aspirations. For this wouldn't be some floating hulk rusting for years by a quayside but possibly a thriving conference centre, tourist attraction and museum. Very much a living ship being used daily by hundreds of people.
Of course, there's a long course to sail through the bureaucracy of actually acquiring what was once a modern battleship.
But then The Deep started out as a simple idea. And what a fine one it turned out to be.
