Incinerator plans scrapped as councils cancel WRG contract
Hull City and East Riding councils have scrapped plans for an incinerator after terminating their contract with the Waste Recycling Group (WRG).
The contract was set to last until 2024 but will now end in March 2013.
The councils will put in place new contractual arrangements for the treatment and disposal of waste.
A spokesman for the councils said: "This is a good outcome for all concerned. We are moving forward with the management of our waste."
The news has delighted Holderness Opposes the Incinerator (HOTI) which has fought the plans for five years.
John Dennis, of the group, said: "Of course HOTI is more than pleased with this news, we are ecstatic.
"Our campaign has had fantastic local support and members of HOTI know they would not have succeeded without the backing of the local rate-payers, so we are delighted for the residents too.
"The decision is in no small part due to the efforts of HOTI which has placed objections to the proposal at every level."

“You wil not find anything out because I tried yesterday and the statement was jointly agreed by all parties and no more to be said Charles. But again you narrow minded ignorant atitude shows. I put out my black bin this week for the first time in 8 weeks and hope it is 10 weeks next time I will recycle all I can you lazy man.If you use all the bins there is next to nothing to burn, so why would you need an incinerator its only purpose was not to get electricity really it was to rduce the landfill to one third now if it is being recycled or composted to that why have a smelly thing that pumps out contaminants into the atmosphere.”

“The reason for needing the incinerator was Hull's Labour Partys Ideas that the people of Hull couldn't manage to recycle at a reasonably high level well they have been better than that. The recycle rates mean that there is no need for an incinerator so well done the people of Hull.”

“Power to the people my ar*e! This is a bad decision brought about by the tory/libdem mismanagement of the economy.
Where is this rubbish going to go?
No mention here of the cost of breaking a 24 year contract. No mention here of the cost of disposing of all the trash of Hull & East Riding.
Can HDM find out what these figures are or do we have to investigate this for ourselves?”

“Fantastic news power to the people! Now for all those councillors who voted for the Incinerator to be kicked out of office. What a waste of money and time this application for an out of date method of burning waste has cost us the tax payers.
Shame on you councillors for voting for it in the first place.”

“Probably only scrapped because of cash.. I dare say if the council hadn't been so badly stung by government cuts that incinerator would be here.. lucky for Hot, not for anyone else, it's hardly green getting our waste ferried around the country, increasing council tax and making a mockery out of the ethics of green management.”

“They can just have a big fleet of trucks ferrying it all over to Walsall like they do with the recycling. That's more environmentally friendly innit?”

“Fantastic news. At last the right decision on the incinerator. Can you imagine the council even thinking about placing this to the west of hull where the road links to the A63 and humber bridge are more suited to extra lorries. Hmm I think not. Maybe the council thought extra smells wouldn't be noticed at saltend. It doesn't matter now. Well done to all HOTI members.”
