The new factory, which has 40 per cent more usable space, will allow the firm to continue production of the shower trays produced in Hull since 1983.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby, leader of East Riding Council, was at the official opening ceremony yesterday.

He said: "This helps put Hull and the East Riding on the map and shows the area is open for business.

"The construction work of the new factory has been tremendous and the fact a brand new facility has been built is fantastic news for the area."

The new factory was opened by Haltemprice and Howden MP David Davis.

It is also hoped the relocation will generate work within the construction industry.

The new site also includes latest technologies such as the use of robots, lasers and automation aimed at boosting production alongside the efforts of the firm's workforce.

The move also provides environmental advantages such as cutting the amount of waste going to land fill by 300 tonnes per year and reducing traffic through residential areas.

Councillor Parnaby said: "The only way is up for the company and the region on the whole.

"Everyone involved in the construction of this building has done a tremendous job.

"I remember the site in July as a farm field. Here we are, months later, with this state-of-the-art building.

"This also shows businesses that we have the land in place to help relocate businesses from the centre and we are able to do it without much disruption to the business."

Founded in 1921, Mira is a manufacturer of mixer, electric, power and digital showers.

The business is owned by American bathroom manufacturer Kohler Co and the company's products are available from retailers nationwide.

Dave Hill, managing director at Kohler Mira, said: "We're delighted with the new site. It's an exciting time for the business and our team members in Hull whose jobs have been protected.

"Kohler Mira is committed to the development of the plant and we have made steps to ensure that environmental factors are at the heart of the build."
