“Hull city council waste management made roughly 80 people redundant last year, this year they employ people who are claiming jobseekers, not for a wage, but for bus fares.if they dont work, they lose their benefits.Thats whats wrong with this country, instead of paying a decent liveable wage, lets get people to do it for nothing, also there is no job at the end of this scandal.Things are not gonna get any better under cameron, tax credits for familys are going to be stopped if employers dont find an extra 8 hours per person,so a family of 2 adults 2 children, where one parent works 16 hours, but carnt find the extra 8 hours, will lose 80 pounds a week, meaning said family must survive on 239 pounds a week.”

“I've got a degree and many other qualifications and still found it a struggle to get any type of work in Hull , people are deluding themselves if they think all unemployed people have no skills or qualifications
Some people will find out the hard way when they lose their own jobs”

“by Worker111, well put but with one addition.
We have to understand that there are many people out there with skills, qualifications and experience who want to find work more than anything but can't, I think we can all sympathise with those people
But there is also that group of people to which you refer who simply are waiting for someone else to fix things for them. They screwed up at school, some with a mind-set from a very young age that they will just live off benefits like mum and dad, and now they are in a rut (particularly with the benefit squeeze which will get tighter and tighter as time goes on). Yes the system is failing them but also they are failing and taking advantage of the system.”

“David_Nivea. Yep agree with you again. People seem to be looking to the government to create jobs. The only jobs the government can create a public sector jobs, but as we all know and simply have to accept the public sector needs reining in in terms of spending.
When it comes to Private sector jobs the government can support and endorse initiatives to create jobs but they can't and won't initiate them.
If tens of thousands of people are waiting on the Government or some other public body to create tens of thousands of jobs then they are in for very long never ending wait.
A message to the kids out there; Make the most of school, get as many qualifications and skills as you can, stay away from alcohol and drugs and you should be fine. There are no guarantees in life but the more strings you add to you bow the better your chances in life.”

“Evwry young person I know who reall wants a job has got one. (most of them while studying also!)
They might not be in charge of BP, a couple work in stores, one works in a call centre, etc.
But these are the kind of jobs you do to gain experience, and it gives you a platform to move on and up.
One of the reasons that there are no jobs, is the shocking standard of education in Hull.
If you are unemployed what are you doing to help yourself, you can do NVQ's, HNC/HND BTEC, and countless other qualifications which look good on your CV.
The very fact you have got off your @rse to go to college shows an employer that you have something about you.
Too many people with little or no qualifications sat waiting for a £30k a year job to fall into their lap.
It doesn't work like that, you get qualifications start at the bottom and work your way up.
Get to work on time, don't be a whinger, be possitive, look smart, don't smell, and you should be OK. If you keep studying whilst you work you will find you shoot up the ladder even quicker.
Not saying it is easy, but I like many others have done it.
Two philosophies to have.
No one owes you a free lunch!
You make your own luck!”

“@RobL1968: "...something needs doing to bring jobs into the area."
What, exactly?
And should the mysterious "They" do it?”

“I heard two twenty something lads from Hull talking on BBC Radio Humberside earlier about their struggle to get a job. I'm sorry but they couldn't even string a proper sentence together and I would put good money on them not having any meaningful skills or qualifications to speak of.
It won't be too long before we are hitting the dizzy heights that Greece and Spain have reached with a young person unemployment rate of 50%. There are too many young people now who are simply unemployable.”

“Wonder what the ratio is for people who are actively involved in helping themselves in getting a job to those who can't even be harassed to get out of bed of a morning?”
