KC train station plans back on track
Plans for a multi-million pound train station for the KC Stadium have taken a major leap forward as Hull City live their Premier League dream.
Transport consultants Steer Davies Gleave have been appointed to conduct a feasibility study into a "rail halt" between the stadium and Hull Royal Infirmary.
KC's Superstadium Management Company has teamed up with Hull Forward, Hull City Council and East Riding Council to resurrect the proposal, first mooted 10 years ago.
Supporters flocking to the stadium for Hull City and Hull FC matches and music fans attending concerts at the ground would be encouraged to leave their cars at home.
It would also benefit staff and visitors at Hull Royal Infirmary, the maternity hospital and the eye hospital, who make around three million journeys to and from the site each year.
Today, Councillor Dave Woods, portfolio holder for environmental sustainability at Hull City Council, said: "Due to the recent successes at the KC Stadium, expansions on the Hull Royal Infirmary site and future regeneration plans linked to the wider Newington St Andrew's Area Action Plan, now is an ideal time to reconsider the viability of a new halt."
With Hull City chairman Paul Duffen stating he may consider extending the stadium's 25,404 capacity in the future, the rail halt would help ease traffic congestion.
The halt would be created at the junction of the Hull to Bridlington line and the Hull to Doncaster lines, close to the Argyle Street road bridge.
It would be about 300 metres east of the KC Stadium and 150 metres west of the hospital complex.
A footbridge and walkways would connect the halt to Argyle Street and the pedestrian walkway linking the KC to Hull city centre.
First mooted in 1998 when plans for the KC Stadium were unveiled, it was originally suggested a halt with four platforms and associated track work would cost about £3m.
However, the cost is likely to be substantially more, a decade later.
A spokeswoman for Network Rail confirmed a business plan had to be produced before a rail halt would be considered.
The plan, which would be carried out after the feasibility study, would include funding details for the project.

“I think its a good idea. It will help divert football fans and will also be easier for people who cannot walk far (my mum has bad arthritis in both knees and doesnt drive and has to mess about catching two buses to HRI when I am unable to take her) so I think it will be a big help, providing the bridge doesnt have lots of steps!!!”

“The only purpose this staion would have is to serve the lazy people who can't be bothered to walk for 15mins. Yeh, Hull needs investment but there is a perfectly good bus service that serves the KC. Why waste £3million+ on a new railway station 2mins away from the current one?!”

“What happened to the idea for a monorail? The rail halt is a good idea in theory, but in practice wouldn't serve any purpose. Trains from Paragon to the Stadium would take longer with the messing about getting on and off than it would take to walk there or get a bus. Coming in from out of town would require special trains, for which the railway stock doesn't exist nor the willingness of the train operating companies to run football specials outside of Wembley. A parl and ride from Priory Park only serves people coming in from the West, and they could catch a bus from there anyway. I'd suggest the KC Management company invest their money elsewhere, if they want a more workable plan, then a tram or trolleybus from Priory to the Bus Station via the Stadium is probably a better option and has uses outside of serving events at the KC, or they could bring back the Monorail idea once again.”

“Sorry I meant to add I agree "why the consultants". Most consultants just read a few textbooks or go around repeating what everyone says to them to top management then get paid £600 per day for stating the Bleeding Obvious. All you have to do is ask the people, stuff consultants.”

“great ,get on and build it,why the need for consultants, the kc built in the park was the best thing hull city council ever built, but they as always cut corners, the stadium should of been a 30.000 as first planned, the rail halts should have been built when the stadium first opened as first planned.also walton st car park should have been tarmaced and landscaped as its a disgrace at the moment.and the proposed walkway from the stadium to prinny ave at the back of sunnybank should have been built as first planned.the current walkway from the kc to argyle st is not wide enough to cope with the volume of supporters after games.and why dont the council do something else sensible and build a train station at the priory pk ,park and ride.and dennis west park is a major improvement now the kc is in it,sounds like you would get clostrophobic on the north york moors.”

“What a waste of money!!
Surly people are quite capable of catching a bus for the 5min journey to the KC?! This would only add to our already overcrowded railway, imagine the people travelling for FREE and the amout of lost revenue on the train as there is no way the conductor would get down to them all!! I'm sure there are better things to spend £3mill on like rebuilding the Beverley - York (via Market Weighton) line!”
