Hull KR player Sean Gleeson watched as his mother was jailed for banking more than £100,000 from a £1.5m heroin deal.

Susan Gleeson was given a 15-month prison sentence after she was found guilty of money laundering.

  1. Court

The money came from a drug-smuggling operation run by Sean's father, Paul, who is serving a seven-year prison sentence.

Sean is understood to have offered £50,000 in bail money before his dad was jailed, which was rejected. Canterbury Crown Court heard Susan Gleeson "enjoyed the trappings of illicit proceedings", with holidays to Las Vegas, Greece and the Dominican Republic, despite claiming benefits.

When police raided the family's home in Wigan in 2011, they found

five flat-screen TVs, a £12,000 18-carat diamond ring, four bottles of champagne, evidence of five luxurious holidays and a £20,000 Mercedes sports car.

They also found Cartier and Armani watches.

Prosecutor Christopher May said: "The Crown's case is that the explanation for the unexplained income into the Gleeson household is that Paul Gleeson was involved in criminal activity, including drug smuggling.

"This income enabled the Gleesons to live a comfortable lifestyle.

"Over a period between January 2007 and the end of 2011, £107,644 was credited to an account that Susan had joint control of.

"More than £63,000 was withdrawn in cash."

She claimed the money had either come from her husband's window fitting work, from savings accounts or from Sean.

Judge Adele Williams said: "Those who help to launder the proceeds of drug smuggling and drug trafficking commit a serious offence."

Paul Gleeson admitted buying specially adapted MG cars that were used to transport 20kg of heroin into Britain.

Sean declined to comment.

“Wait for the personal comments to start from supporters of other sports clubs in the area. This could get nasty, and I don't think it is appropriate to allow comments on this story. The offences never took place in this area, the court case was not in this area. The only connection is that the son of the person involved happens to play rugby here. So what? You can't control what other members of your family do.

Incidently, before I'm asked, I support Hull FC, but still feel this way”
