Youngsters fed up with filthy streets in west Hull have called on politicians to clear up.

A group of 12 children have written letters to councillors and MPs, drawn posters and made flyers in an attempt to get their streets cleaner.

Rubbish is strewn across Heron Street and Albermarle Street, off Anlaby Road, and includes dirty nappies and dead rats.

The youngsters approached Simon Lister, of the Fish Trade Centre in Heron Street, asking for help with clearing the site and were told it was against health and safety guidelines.

But Mr Lister agreed to help the children.

He said: “Last Friday, some of the children came to me and asked for some gloves, litter pickers and plastic bags.

“When I asked why, they said they wanted to play out there, but there was a dead rat on the street and the other areas were covered with dirty nappies and rusty nails.

“I had a look and told them they shouldn't clean it up themselves as there were needles and it was a health and safety issue.

“I was pleased by their initiative and commitment to their environment and local area.”

As a result of the children's actions, representatives from Hull City Council visited the area on Monday.
