Hornsea school pupils help quake victims
Torches, toilet rolls and cooking utensils are everyday items we all take for granted.
But as Hornsea Community Primary School pupils found out, they are items victims of natural disasters could very well be without.
Following the devastation of the earthquake in Haiti, pupils from the school have delved into their own money boxes to raise more than £600 for victims of natural disasters.
The equipment they've paid for will go in Aquaboxes, which have been paid for by the Rotary Club of Holderness.
Once useful items have been removed from the boxes, they can be use to purify water.
Maria Foxton, headteacher of Hornsea Community Primary School, is proud of the efforts from pupils and parents.
She said: "Through role play of the situations these victims of disasters find themselves in, through no fault of their own, the pupils came up with the equipment needed to fill each box.
"The problems seem to have really hit home with the children, who have been sticking coins onto sheets throughout the school. They seem to really appreciate what they've got.
"A big thank you also to all the parents, who as always, have been very supportive."
Amongst the items donated include needles and threads, nails, hammers, nappies and toys.
Travis Jordan, six, said he had donated money from his money box for the cause.
He said: "I was quite shocked they need things like pans, screws, nails and they need little pills in the water to make it safe.
"We can just turn on a tap."
Geoff Phillips, from the Rotary Club of Holderness, visited the school to thank pupils for their efforts.
He said: "The pupils and staff have been brilliant and done a first-class job to raise more than £600 to fill eight Aquaboxes with essential items.
"I don't think I've ever seen the boxes filled with so much stuff.
"The boxes will now be sent to Derbyshire where they will be sent to various places.
"Each box is numbered so we will find out exactly where it will go and will let the school know, as well as giving them a Rotary International Award Certificate."
