Sally, of east Hull, told Femail she was "very close" to her sister Kirsty, who is a single mum to two boys, Matthew, 17, and Ryan, 14. "It wasn't my sister's choice to become a single mum, but she has been for 12 years," said Sally.

"She has done an amazing job bringing up her boys, working full-time to make sure they have a roof over their heads and meals on the table.

"Her day usually starts around 5.30am, up for work then straight home after to taxi the boys to football and rugby training.

"She never makes time for herself, her life is the boys and she often goes without for them.

"A big change happened when our lovely dad, Eddie, passed away – Kirsty was so close to him. He lived around the corner.

"When he died, part of my sister went as well. Before, she could pop round for a coffee and a chat when things got a little hard and he'd say, 'come on Kirsty, pull yourself together for the boys, they need you'.

"My sister is finding it hard without our dad and this would be an amazing experience for her, some 'me time', and would give her back the confidence that she no longer has. My sister is lovely, beautiful and special to me and all I want is to see her smile and be happy."

Kirsty, 42, said her sister was a "diamond" for putting her forward for some much-appreciated "me time".

Kirsty told Femail: "I said to the lady, when I was having my hair done, I'm not used to this.

"I'm used to doing everything for everybody else. It was nice to be doing something on my own."

Femail was pleased to be able to send Kirsty for her makeover at Outfit, Kingston Retail Park, to select a new outfit, and then on to Colour Lounge, Carr Lane, for her hair and make-up to be done.

Julia Bilton, creative director at Colour Lounge, said: "When Kirsty came in, she had a grown- out bob. She wanted a complete change, so together we decided to go for a low-maintenance, shorter style – so we chose the new Dannii Minogue crop.

"The colour that Kirsty already had really suited her skin tone, so we updated it by adding scrunched-in sections to complement the new cut.

"We styled her hair using Kerastase products and finished off with shine spray."

Gillian Cook, a personal shopper at Outfit, said: "Kirsty was open to lots of different things and tried on several outfits.

"She said she wanted her outfit for an engagement party she was attending.

"I'm a similar age to Kirsty and it helped when we were having a look at the alternatives for her.

"Kirsty looked fabulous and I am sure she will have a great night at her party."

Leanne Doody, of Colour Lounge, said: "I wanted to give Kirsty a look she could use for daytime and evenings, so I used a golden shimmer all over the eyelids and blended with a darker chocolate brown from the outer corner to create a smoky effect. The eyes were finished with a brown liner and plenty of mascara."

"It was all absolutely amazing," said Kirsty. "Every one of the girls I saw was lovely and so helpful.

"The lady at Outfit had the same ideas as me and we talked about my style and looked at some things together. I had gone in wanting a dress but I couldn't see anything. I am still a rock chick at heart and I fell in love with a top – and the shoes I got were amazing. I don't get to do girlie.

"I wanted my hair cutting and it was coloured a dark chocolate with caramel tips to catch the sunlight.

"For work I normally only wear foundation and because I was going out after, Colour Lounge did a 'teatime' look for me. Leanne was really helpful – I told her I wear black eyeliner and she suggested I go for brown. It was really nice and it's changed my ideas about what I should wear in the future."

Wallis black and tan silky blouse, £35; Wallis petite soft black trousers, £29.50; Wallis nude and leopard print court shoes, £32; Dorothy Perkins long gold necklace, £6.25 (half-price). All from Outfit, Kingston Retail Park, Hull.
