Labour councillor ousted over Hull budget vote
A Labour councillor who voted against his own party over budget cuts facing Hull City Council has been removed as chairman of a city committee.
Labour councillors voted to oust Councillor Gary Wareing as chairman of the Riverside Area Committee after he voted against the ruling Labour group over its plans for cutting services and staff.

Councillor Gary Wareing
The vote of no confidence to remove Cllr Wareing as Chair was moved by Cllr Colin Inglis and was supported by all Labour councillors present except Cllr Wareing and Newington Ward Councillor Alan Clark, who abstained.
Opposition councillors from the Lib Dems have seized on the development to hint at splits within Labour ranks over how the ruling group tackles the biggest cut in funding from Central Government in decades. Lib Dem opposition leader Cllr Abigail Bell said: "While the "do nothing and hope it all goes away" option that Cllr Wareing is calling for is clearly not a sensible way forward, he has hit the nail on the head in one sense. "He and thirty-odd other Labour councillors were elected on a "no cuts, no job losses" platform. Now they're in charge and they're doing exactly what they promised not to do."

“JohnEG Ref; Anlaby Park Library. Instead of making silly claims that because the ward has no Labour Cllrs you should be asking why did the Lib Dems not spend the money on it when they had the £100+million KC sales? Or why the 3 Lib Dem Cllrs didn't make a fuss when it was down to close under the last Lib Dem budget Put forward until labour saved it for two years?
If your going to try and put a point forward at least have one that will stand up.”

“I agree the houses do look nice. How come every other house appears to have a trampoline in the back garden?
Just a shame Anlaby Park Library didn't have some money spending on it, but then why should the council bother if they don't have a labour councillor in that ward.”

“Re OPE Tower Blocks.
I thought that Hull had an acute shortage of one and two bedroom properties to let ?
I hear this every time a couple or single person living in a 2/3/4 bedroomed house paid for by housing benefits is discussing the 'bedroom tax'.
Actually its not a tax at all, tax is paid on earned income, it is a reduction in benefits.
Surely there is a vast market for the type of smaller apartments/flats that the council cannot wait to demolish?
Wouldn't it make more sense to revamp them, using local labour and actually try to rent them out to these people who whinge about the shortage of such properties?”

“JohnEG. That was the view of the Labour opposition. I see nothing wrong with giving every tenant a warm home to live in. So many use to complain about the cold, damp and resulting health problems. The houses that were brought back into use are still let to this day, go take a look at Merton Grove, or Wadham. I live close by and they look infinitely better than the derelict shells they use to be. Go take a look on Google maps if you think I'm making it up. There would be an even bigger housing shortage now if it wasn't for the investment to bring all those properties back into use.”

“@stantheman: Don't worry "Hull City Council has announced plans for a £30m revamp of Orchard Park following the demolition of the estate's iconic tower block".
Found this interesting article from July 2002: "Councillors 'waste £200m windfall on empty homes'" "£95 million on double glazing and central heating"
http://tinyurl.com/cvxk55u
Before VicMay replies, it was BEFORE the LibDems controlled Hull.”

“No-one mentioning the splendid free advertisement for our city on the main 10 o'clock BBC News last night?
Our portfolio holder for leisure and culture own Orchard Park Estate Ward named and shamed as the worst place in Britain to find a job.
A terribly depressing five or so minutes showing the very worst of the estate and its problems.
It made Hull look like the last place in the country that anyone would want to live in.”
