Hull rockers Late Night Fiction have a little green book.

It's not a little black book. It doesn't contain the names of foxy groupies. At least, not that they're letting on.

But it does contain just about everything else. Contacts. Gig dates. Songs. The date of the band curry night. A roadmap to fame and fortune. And, perhaps most importantly, dreams.

In this book the quartet have set out everything they want to achieve and how they want to get there. It speaks of determination and confidence – and bizarrely – they're a bit embarrassed about it.

It's almost like being organised isn't quite rock'n'roll enough. Maybe it isn't, but any band who's ever got anywhere has probably had a little green book of their own.

When guitarist Reece Britton checks the date of the band's next live date, he hides the book under the table.

"Don't mention the book, will you?" he asks. "It's a bid sad, isn't it? But we've got everything in here. Look, that's the date of the band curry night. It says not to have the madras."

The gig, by the way, is tomorrow, at The Lamp, in Norfolk Street, Hull. It will be the opening shot in a year packed-full of what the band hope will be lots of live dates, touring, recording and a burgeoning reputation.

They're certainly chomping at the bit to take the next step up and, if the green book is any indicator, have the commitment to see it through.

There can't be many other local bands who have a graphic designer busy designing T-shirts for tour merchandise or wallpapering a wall, covering it with clocks and organising a photoshoot for the cover of their first studio EP.

The national tour proper will start with a send-off show at The Ringside, in Beverley Road, Hull, on Wednesday, March 24, when they'll be playing tracks from their five-track debut, called Hands And Numbers.

If you can't get to the shows, it's also available on iTunes and from Beasley's and Chinese Laundry in Hull city centre.

"Our sound has been changing recently – it's been getting a bit more progressive, a bit heavier," says frontman James Thompson.

"We're trying to do something a little bit different, something that no-one around here is doing. When we were teenagers we were into all the post-hardcore bands like Biffy Clyro and Yourcodenameis:Milo and I think that shows through in our music. But hopefully we've got something fresh to offer, too."

"There's no point not having ambitions," says drummer Josh Meredith. "You might as well try and do something and see where it gets you. The difference between bands who get somewhere and those who don't is effort. We're prepared to put the work in and you never know, it could pay off."

Late Night Fiction, supported by Acrobat, will play tomorrow at The Lamp, in Norfolk Street, Hull. Entry costs £3.50. Doors open at 8pm. For more details call (01482) 326137.
