Budding music stars can enjoy their moment in the spotlight by entering the Mail's Talent Trail 2010.

Now in its 14th year, the competition is officially launching today, with the organisers looking for the next big act on Hull's music scene.

Heats will be held twice a week, starting on either February 16 or February 23, before the acts are whittled down.

The cream of the crop will then compete in the semi-finals on April 20, 22, 27 and 29, before the Grand Final at Hull City Hall.

The winner will receive the Talent Trail trophy and a prize of £1,500.

The runner-up prize is £750 and the third-placed act will walk away with £250.

Today, the Mail publishes an entry form for people to fill in if they want the chance to take away the top prize.

This year's event is sponsored by Devilfishpoker.com – run by Hull-born poker player Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott.

He said: "I only sign the cheque – the real credit goes to the organisers and the Mail, who put a lot of effort into the competitions.

"But it's great to help these people achieve their dreams."

Talent Trail will begin in clubs across Hull, where the heats and semi-finals are held, before moving for the final at Hull City Hall on Thursday, May 13.

See today's Mail for your entry form.

“Its a shame this competition is influenced by the organisers views of the artists rather than purely the judges. Certain individuals who will be nameless will have ripe pickings when it comes to the final..do you really want to part with 15% of your performance fee. If you are confident you have the talent you can perform all over the city for free at open mic events and will be judged more fairly..take it from there..if you love to sing and have talent and drive , you will get the gigs.”

“Why are poeple wasting their time putting abusive opinions on here!! For your information, I am not a chav and was in last year's final. I am a trained singer who went to a stage school in London and am also a qualified teacher. I work very hard at what I do, and am starting up my own theatre school. Why judge people when you don't know them just because you probably haven't got the guts or talent to enter the competition itself!! The competition is not only for people from Hull, it is often advertised in the national newspaper for performing arts, 'The Stage'. I had only just arrived in Hull when I entered last year, and before that had never lived in Yorkshire. It is always said that Yorkshire people were friendly and non-judgemental, but these comments are not proving that at all. How sad. Hull has been given a bad name, but it's only due to the huge council estates that make the percentage of crime higher. I feel a lot safer in Hull than in north London...where's the gun crime in Hull?????”

“Be fair, DVD gang, it's all just a bit of fun. Who could ever get enough of hearing Hullfolk honking/shrieking Mustang Sally, I Will Always Love You and that song by The Mavericks time and time again? It is what it is. Cheers now.”
