A GRUESOME discovery of deer heads, fox heads and dead birds has prompted animal rights campaigners to contact local schools.

The animals were discovered in a ditch near a lay-by in Swine Lane, near Ganstead, to the east of Hull, on Thursday morning.

Ganstead resident and dog walker Keith Preston contacted the Mail after photographing the heads.

The 72-year-old said: "I was out walking my German Shepherd, Zana, when she started sniffing something. I thought it was just a dead rabbit.

"But then a neighbour said she had seen heads in the ditch, so I went back and photographed them and reported it to East Riding Council.

"It think it is absolutely disgusting.

"Someone has obviously done this on purpose and dumped them there."

Now Peta, (The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals foundation), says they will be issuing information and teaching packs to local schools, hoping to educate children about animal cruelty and encourage anyone who knows about the incident to inform the authorities.

Suzanne Barnard, Peta's education manager, who specialises in animal cruelty cases, said: "Sadly, we have seen cases like this before. We see a lot of animal cruelty.

"We have had examples of cruelty to wildlife such as rabbits ears being cut off and other animals being decapitated.

Animal abusers are people with psychological problems and they have taken out their issues on a defenceless animal.

"Animals can't report their abuse to the police or tell anyone they are suffering.

"When incidents such as these happen, we contact schools in the hope of educating children about animal cruelty.

"We give teachers factsheets about animal cruelty so they can get across the message to pupils that it is wrong.

"There is a pack we will be sending which includes videos, posters, lesson plans and information sheets.

"We hope that someone will see the newspaper coverage of this incident and they will be able to give the authorities the information they need to catch this person.

"It will also encourage children to treat animals kindly."

Humberside Police carried out inquiries in the area after the discovery was made.

Anyone who has information about illegal poaching is urged to call them on 0845 6060222.

“any animal dead is distressing just as much as it is seeing it take its last breath before someone put a a knife in its throat, unfortunately there is no way of saying it that if you eat meat your all part of it, if you think its wrong like I do than don't be a hypocrite , choose vegan, i did 30 years ago and by the way i have never eaten lentils or tofu, there is other foods out there you know for all you people that don't research stuff before you type, :)”

“How do you know that the animals in the ditch were treat sadistically? From my viewpoint i would say with almost certainty that they were shot. There is no way a dog could do for that amount of animals. It's a rifle or a shotgun job. Obviously the heads should not have been put in a ditch. But these people have trespassed and broke the law. That is a different argument altogether. What i am addressinhg is this cruelty that you speak of. What do you think happens to the chickens in the nuggets you feed your children..or the cows..or the pigs. Is that ok then?
In the olden days they would have mounted the heads and put them on the wall in their mansions. Your out of touch with reality. The kind of people who tell their children hamburgers grown in a burger patch. You eat meat but dont have the wherewithall or the guts to go and get your own and decry those who do.”

“This is such a horrible case of animal cruelty! I¿m a year 3 teacher and didn¿t know a lot about the organisation PETA until I came across their stall at the Birmingham education show back in March. I picked up some free teaching resources called Share the World (DVD, poster, lesson plans) and I have to say I think they¿re excellent! They teach children to treat animals kindly and think about them in a meaningful way. They fitted in well with life processes when I covered this with my class. (The resources were all age appropriate.) Since then I¿ve ordered a lot more of the teaching packs. You can get them from www.PETAF.org.uk and I¿d highly recommend them to any teachers reading this!”

    “I disagree with Mike's comments.

When all an animal has to look forward to is suffering followed by an agonising death, euthanasia can be the most humane option.

I respect PETA as they take in the animals nobody wants - you can see it on their website. They take stray dogs so disfigured by mange that they are almost no longer recognisable as canines; litters of parvo-infected puppies, plagued with diarrhea and vomiting, literally dehydrating to death; and backyard dogs who have known only chains, beatings, and neglect and have gone mad because of it.

PETA come to the animals¿ aid when nobody else is willing to end their pain. I'm glad there's an organisation out there that does this.”

“I am appalled that the Hull Daily Mail have begun to endorse PETA.
This organization kills 97% of all animals it rescues in the USA and calls for 100% of all stray cats to be killed.
Furthermore they promote vandalising of McDonalds, KFC etc. they also advocate throwing red paint over people who dare to wear fur.
Now they are using the finding of some deer heads in a ditch to promote propoganda in schools to our children. I have seen this literature, have you? It has titles "Daddy Kills Animals" & "Mummy Kills Animals" in comic book format. Got to get them young!! The covers of these "educational" leaflets show grotesque caricatures of adults grinning sadistically whilst holdindg blood dripping knives. This isn't the first time that the HDM have attacked Country Sports as i remember the same thing happening last year against the Lurcher owners. I strongly suspect you have some Vegan/Peta activists on your editorial team. You never show any balance with regards to Country Sports whatsoever. You show bias evry time.
The irony is not lost on me though. Hulls most read local newspaper is in support of an organisation that wishes to ban fishing.
Whats for tea tonight - Lentils?”

“Giving PETA a platform is totally out of order. This is a despicable organisation that whilst promoting animal welfare kills 97% of all animals it rescues in the USA.
They promote vandalism of McDonalds, KFC and throwing paint on members of the public who dare to wear fur.
I am disgusted that they are using this story to promote giving our children their propoganda in schools to our kids. I have seen these "educational leaflets". They are in a comic book format with titles such as "daddy Kills Animals" and "Mummy Kills animals" with grotesque caricatures of adults wielding blood dripping knives. Even your article gives credance that people who hunt are murderers waiting to happen, but from an organisation that wants to ban fishing it isn't surprising. I can't fail to see the irony really. Hulls most read daily newspaper promotes an orgabnisation that is anti-fishing. It isnt the first time you have attacked country sports. I strongly susdpect you have Vegan/PETA sympathisers on your editorial team. You never show any balance with regards to this issue whatsoever. You are totally out of order Hull Daily Mail. Whats for tea tonight-Lentils?”
