Regarding Trudi Davison's report "road closure will cut town in half" (Mail, January 16).

As part of the Beverley Southern Bypass plan, East Riding Council proposes to close Flemingate at the level crossing to all vehicles, to force use of the Southern Bypass instead of traffic going through Flemingate.

But as ward councillor Kerri Harold rightly says, it will cut the town in half.

All southern Beverley residents and all visitors coming up the A164 will be cut off from going along Flemingate when wishing to visit the Beverley Leisure Complex, the Flemingate Bowling Club green, the new shopping centre on the Beverley Museum site, a building supplies centre and several pubs, including Hodgson's.

Also, southern residents of Beverley wishing to visit the new hospital in Swinemoor Lane, or go to Tickton, Hornsea, etc, will have to go through the centre of Beverley.

Many bowling clubs located south of Beverley will be displeased to go a long way around when visiting Flemingate Bowling Club.

So why doesn't the council let people freely make their own choice of route to use the bypass or go through the town via Flemingate?

Douglas Kingston,

Voases Close,

Anlaby.

“It is obviously not an issue for many people (no one has replied to the above post in the last six weeks)
As to: "Beverley will be cut in half" - It already is cut in half every time the railway gates are closed, this is quite often and sometimes for lengthy periods. At times of busy traffic (the morning, dinner & teatime rush hours) plus mid afternoon school run, the railway gates can cause traffic to back up the full length of Keldgate onto Queensgate & the lenght of Flemingate back past the Beck, at these times not all this traffic can cross the railway gates before they close again for the next train. So for at least 30% - 40% of the working day the new bypass would be a quicker way to access the opposite side of Beverley.

Unfortunately most drivers appear to be optimists, prefering to choose a geographically shorter more direct route in the belief that it would be quicker than a faster longer route, perhaps this is why the Council has decided on compulsion rather than driver "choice".

The bypass will reduce through traffic, allowing Lairgate, Hengate, Railway Street etc to be viable as an easy route to the hospital and Eastern Beverley for the concerned southern residents.

This bypass will help protect our ancient buildings from vibrationand also deal with air pollution & quality of life (traffic noise, inability to cross the road in safety) for the residents Queensgate, Keldgate, Flemingate et al.

Someone may reply that all this is anecdotal, well, as a resident of South Beverley I'd call it obsevational, but please check with the council for the figures, they have completed many many traffic surveys over the years, which I presume have steered their decisions.
