An open letter to East Riding Council from Hornsea Town Councillor Geoff Hindle

I have just received a leaflet from East Riding Council with reference to the Floral Hall's future. I have never in all my days read such a loaded leaflet.

The people of Hornsea are not getting any option other than that which our supposed Lords and Masters have deemed will happen.

In spite of resistance they continue to force through their choice, changing the story at every stage.

The two options given are no option at all – do we want a Big Extension to the Leisure centre, or a Small Extension at the Leisure Centre?

In other words, the Leisure Centre, come what may.

Beverley, listen to us, NO! We don't want it there, we never did. We've been telling you for nearly 10 years now, ever since the idea was first mooted.

Hornsea's north end has been steadily destroyed over the last few years - shelters and toilets removed, pleasant gardens, sunken and otherwise, filled in and grassed over, kiosks for refreshments completely scrapped, changing facilities and Hornsea swimming club building all pulled down.

The area looks bleak and you dare to blather on about regenerating the central area. The promenade to the south of The Marine Hotel has already had vast amounts spent on it, the Leisure Centre further south speaks for itself.

What about listening to us and regenerating the now almost 'dead' Northern end of our promenade? That sea wall and promenade was built in 1907 after an horrendous storm and since then it has stood the test of time, maintenance has been minimal because it hasn't needed it. Meanwhile a little to the south the wall has gone up and up.

But you then set to and filled in several feet of the original car park on which to raise your Leisure Centre. It stands now about two meters higher than the original car park – why, because it flooded.

How high will the next phase be built up, how many more thousands of tons of rubble turned into a landscaped area that isn't wanted?

I enclose a picture of the former car park area taken in the late 1980s, also showing an uninterrupted view to the beach.

Why oh why do you not do what you were elected to do – listen to your constituents in all areas and try to meet their wishes? After all, most of your money comes from us.

Barbara Jefferson, bless her, has tried and tried to get you all to listen to reason, and logic, but no, you persist with your "They will get what we want" attitude.

I openly defy you, I will fight to have this facility rebuilt where it is, where the vast majority still want it.

I stood for the Hornsea Town Council in 2007, was voted in and since then nearly every meeting has had a reference to the future of the Floral Hall.

People do care, they have now given their opinion at least twice, the last survey actually slighted the East Riding Council on the way it has handled this whole issue.

Rest assured you will not get the comfortable answer you are seeking. I am calling on all citizens that care to ignore this leaflet or write the third option that we want boldly on the reply – then maybe when you get your new orders in writing you will actually believe us.

“Hornsea has been held back for the last 50 years or so by blinkered people who don't want change. If we want jobs, prosperity and a great future for our kids, we need dramatic change. We need vision, imagination and the courage to let go of the ...tag Hornsea has of being a retirement town.
Come on lets have the bottle to make Hornsea the best town on the East coast. A Marina with shops around it would make Hornsea accessable to the " Round the World Yacht Race" and all its followers - We desperately need a five star hotel with conference facilities - We desperately need all access roads upgrading, especialy now HOORAH Tesco's is coming to town!
The car park situation needs sorting out - Which idiot decided to put the parking fees up for the council owned car parks? All they have succeded in doing is filling up all the private car park spaces, in every street in town. While all the pay car parks stand empty.”

“If we saw as much 'public' reaction to what most of us hope for here , as the proposed Tesco store is getting after only one day.

The new Hall would have built 2 years ago. come on Hornsea Speak out Loudly.”

    “Dear Mr Southward.
I take exception to being called dear or old, i am not your granny. I may be older than i was, but i now have experience. Lots of experience gathered during over 30 years away from my adopted town. - I came here when i was 7 and have loved it ever since, a childhood spent on the beach, the wonder, the curiousity, it's still there. Unfortunately the Promenade, the deckchairs and a nice cuppa aren't ,they've been destroyed by Philistines. I came back because i love the place, its quirkyness, its timewarped atitude, and its honesty. I may only be a little David in comparison to big organisations but i intend to keep hurling my stones for as long as it takes.
Jumbled, with or without lost threads, i haven't lost my marbles like the forces that would continue to destroy what isn't theirs. It must be jealousy, that is the reason mooted nowadays for vandalism, you haven't got one so you will spoil ours.
No way. the people have said 3 times now what they want. I have always believed in standing up for myself, being counted and being available. - my no is in the book, where is yours? i can be seen at any Council meeting, Civic Society Event, Lets Go Hornsea and many other functions supporting my opinion. where are you? who are you? how long have you been a resident?
20years from now my views will still be the same - this is a democratic country so i will go with the majority.
The Majority want a new build on the current site. choice, logic, history and public opinion say so.”

“First, I sincerely wish you a quick recovery to good health.
    -----------------------------

Now then Michael Smallwood, How Smallminded? What a disappointment that you are trying to bring the "Future of the Floral Hall decision" down to a nasty party party political level.

You make it quite clear that you loathe the views of the elected Conservative members, who you say are acting like our Conservative MP, and you call him a "publicity seeking Jumping Jack" etc?
I don't think sneering at our MP will get you very far. From my own experience I can say and believe that he is the most dedicated and diligent MP this contituency has ever had.

Your hateful rhetoric is reminiscent of "Old Labour" days. it is aimed to be divisive, with little regard for the truth and its purpose is designed to be as damaging as possible to any opinion that is not shared by yourself and our small minded Town Council.

I'm surprised to hear that your views are also the general view of the Hornsea Town Council. I thought, except for one councillor, you were all Independent.

    Frank Southward, Hornsea.”

“The North Promenade would need £millions to be spent on additional sea wall protection. For the time being , this is not a problem and it should be safe for another twenty years or so but eventually it will be necessary to bring the wall to the same condition as the rest of the sea frontage.
    -------------------------------

    Dear old Geoff, (bless you),
I've just re-read your letter. It was certainly amusing to see you spluttering and fuming away, losing your thread at times but never- the- less I think most people will have got your drift and the sincerity of your feelings.
I'm sure you make what your fellow councillors will regard as an eloquent case for your own and the Town Councils views.
However much of what you say is no more than uninformed gossiped opinion.
    * I don't think The ERYC had anything to do with the building of The Leisure Centre and according to The Environment Agency. There has been no record of any flooding.
*You did refer to the Original North Promenade Sea Wall and as you say, it is over a hundred years old and, yes, although there may be no indication yet of it suddenly failing, it will have taken a hammering over the century.
*Surely it would be considered foolhardy to build a new very large building of any sort here without first spending £millions on additional sea wall protection?
*Hornsea's people have been waiting for many years for this new Hall; it is very much needed for theatre, dance and other entertainment.
It's time that you and the rest of the Town Council took the blinkers from your eyes and came to terms with Hornsea's real needs in this 21st century.
    * At the protest meeting in the Floral Hall, most of the objections came from the more elderly present and I think it is in the main, only the elderly section of the community that you can speak for.
    * I wonder what your views on the matter will be in twenty or so years time?
    Frank Southward.”

“I have read the leaflet sent by East Riding council and consider it an insult to the people of Hornsea. The timing of sending out the said paper was carefully planned so that as few people as posible would reply. We have been treated dispicably over this matter. We are not idiots and we do know what we want. Firstly we want the truth, then to be listened to. Numbers plucked out of thin air with nothing to suibnstansiate them do not convince us that the ERYC know what they are doing.
Replace the Floral Hall where it is, the meeting at the Floaral Hall showed that this is what we want, listen to us.”

“ERYC's Dirty Tricks department put this leaflet together. They know that Hornsea wants a new Floral Hall built on the site of the present hall, but they are determined to force on us a bolt on extension to the present Leisure Centre.
The best thing to do is cross out the questions and write on the reply section what you want.
Do not be misled by the propoganda in the leaflet, they do not tell you that they have no intention of building anything like our beloved Floral Hall, they intend to give us a community centre, similar to Elloughton cum Brough.”

“I fully agree with Cllr Geoff Hindle
The Conservative ERYC are trying to ride rough shod over the people of Hornsea with their dictatorial attitude on their plans for the future relocation of our Floral hall.
But they have done so before with their stupid redesign of Newbeggin and the imminent closure of the Tourist Information Centre in Newbeggin and its relocation to guess were, yes, the leisure centre, which now risks the possibility of becomming the most under populated service centre in the north of England.

The Conservative ERYC are treating the people of Hornsea akin the the Poor Relations of the ERYC, examples of expenditure in Conservative Bridlington at their new leisure
centre, as against the proposed second best shambles at Hornsea clearly demonstrate the financial discrimination being practised by the Conservative ERYC and conclusively prove the point.

Indeed the Conservative ERYC are now acting very much like our Conservative MP a publicity seeking 'Jumping Jack of all Trades and master of NONE. Nothing Ventured ,Nothing
gained. Nothing achieved, with much taken away.”
