TRADESMEN across East Yorkshire are being offered £100m of work on a major regeneration scheme set to create hundreds of jobs.

Plumbers, joiners, builders, electricians and ground workers are being encouraged to apply for a share of the work in west Hull.

Gateway, a government-funded regeneration project, is transforming the city's Newington and St Andrew's area.

Already, more than 900 homes have been refurbished and a further 2,000 are in the pipeline to be completed.

Another 2,000 are set to be demolished and re-built.

Now, local contractors – from sole traders up to large multi-national companies – are being invited to submit tenders to get involved with the massive redevelopment work taking place over the next five years.

At a special event, details about what work will be available, time scales, which trade sectors will be needed and when will be outlined.

Chris Hilton, development director for Gateway – a partner in the Mail's Bounce Back 2010 scheme, which aims to help the region recover from recession – said: "We are committed to the use of local labour on our developments and we are very keen to engage with companies from across the area at this event.

"It offers local firms, both big and small, the chance to express an interest and tender for work.

"It is vital that we help local businesses on redevelopment schemes of this size, certainly with the economy as it is now."

At the event, being held next week, help will also be on hand for smaller businesses to be led through the tender process.

Construction Works, a Hull-based company established to support the local construction industry, is hosting the meeting.

The event will take place on Wednesday, March 10, at The Village Hotel on Priory Park, west Hull, between 4pm and 6pm.

Companies and tradesmen interested in taking part in the meeting, which will be held in the venue's Inspiration Suite, should contact Rachael Fairburn at Rachael@constructionworks.org

“Whats ther bet that the mojority of the work goes to the big boys who then subby all the work out to the likes of us for peanuts! The brick barons and the large companies are screwing this trade into the ground by advertising plenty of work but offering ridiculuse rates to subbys whilst makig a fortune themselves! A lot of brickies including myself are having to work for less than half the rate we were on last year due to them constantly cutting the rates! I will attend the meeting but cant see me coming away very happy! Time will tell!”

“will be the same old companies who get the work, small local contractors will not get a look in until it's subbed down to them after the big boys have taken their cut! the same companies who are on the approved council lists and convicted of 'cover priceing'.”
