Hull North MP Diana Johnson has called on the Government's housing minister to visit the city after suggestions social housing tenants from outside the area could be moved to the city.

Last year, it was apparently mooted by Croydon Council that people could be sent to Hull to help save money, although this was later denied.

However, these claims were repeated in reports over the weekend.

Ms Johnson said: "On the one hand, this Government's housing and welfare policies pressure people down South needing housing to move to the North, but the Government is also telling people in the North struggling to find work to move to the South.

"It's absurd and cruel.

"People all over the country need jobs and affordable housing in their own region.

"With the Government slashing social housing investment, it's challenging enough in Hull meeting the needs of our existing population."

Ms Johnson said she had been calling for Grant Shapps to visit Orchard Park ever since the plug was pulled on a £160 million redevelopment project in November 2010.

“Quite amusing to see a Labour MP complaining about the [potential] arrival of non-locals, in order to make political capital, after their use of immigration as a political device and tool of social engineering, to "...render their [the right wing] arguments out of date...' - Grant Neather, Labour Special Advisor.

“Hull has been the dumping ground for all sorts of people and ner do wells under successive governments. So no change there. If Hull had had the £25bn being spent on the Olympics or some of the £32bn about to be spent on the high speed train (to save some people 15min. in the journey) Hull would be a far richer and much better place. Then, perhaps, the City would be in a much better position to help with some of these homeless people.”

“Does the counlcil need to be involved...is it any of their business, anyway? If the council from London is prepared to pay a private landlord the tenant's rent and a bond, what's it got to do with Hull CC? Even if the London borough continues to pay for an extended period - financilly, they'll still be ahead, because of high rents down there - and later leaves the customer to fend for himself, the objective will be acheived ie get 'em out of London...they won't get back.
I'm not familiar with the housing set up but if housing allocated according to 'need' surely a homelss person's need is greater than most others, so Hull CC may be forced to house them, regardless of being 'new' here.”

“The funny thing is, I asked my councillor about this and Hull City Council has never been approached. They have not agreed to anything and it has it's own, quite lengthy, waiting list. Anyone travelling to Hull for a house without family here will not have a local connection and will be down at the bottom of the lists. I suppose they could rent private if they had a bond and the first months rent in advance, like everyone else, but the idea they will get a cheap council house is ridiculous.”
