Mother jailed for shocking child neglect as dead dog and parrot found in 'appalling' Hull home

A MOTHER left her neglected children at home in "appalling" conditions with dead animals as she went out drinking.

Her house in west Hull was found to be covered in dog faeces, rotting food and rubbish.

There was even a dead dog left in the middle of one room and a dead parrot left in its cage.

Hull Crown Court heard the barmaid, 33, treated her 14-year-old daughter as a "slave" and sent her young son, 10, for takeaways across busy roads as she stayed out late drinking in city bars. She has now been jailed for two years.

Judge Simon Jack told her: "The children were left without food or hot water and left in a home with two dead animals.

"In all my time dealing with cases of this kind I have never seen photographs as bad as the ones showing the state of the inside of your home. It was appalling.

"For whatever reason you chose to prioritise your job and your own social life, going out drinking after work over the welfare of your children.

"The message for children when they are neglected like this is that they are not worthy of being loved and looked after. They get the message it is their fault."

The judge told the mother he was considering suspending her prison sentence but changed his mind after seeing the shocking photos of her house.

"You simply let your kids fend for themselves," he said.

"Before I saw the photos I thought I could deal with the case by a suspended prison sentence but that is not possible – this is far too bad. In the future your children need you to sort your life out and be there for them. They need a mum who is not forever out socialising and ignoring them."

The children were rescued when a concerned relative called the NSPCC.

The daughter had called the relative for help and told them there was no food in the home, she was starving and could not get into the kitchen because of the "rubbish bags and flies".

The charity went to the house with the police to help but the children refused to let them in on instructions from their mother.

Eventually, a relative convinced them to open the door so they could be rescued.

Prosecutor Mark Kendall told the court: "It was one of the worst houses the officers had ever seen. They described it as being in a filthy state and was not suitable for habitation, let alone habitation by children."

The woman was arrested in a city centre bar while out drinking. She pleaded guilty to two counts of cruelty to children.
