HULL: City MP Karl Turner has warned about the "ticking time bomb" of youth unemployment during a debate on young people not in educat- ion, employment or training (Neets).

The Hull East MP said the rising number of Neets was due to the Government's failure to "get a grip" on unemployment among young people.

His remarks came during a BBC Radio Humberside debate with Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy, Hull Liberal Democrat Councillor Claire Thomas and Dr John Buttrick, of Hull Children's University.

Mr Turner said: "Young people are paying the price for this Government's economic failure as long-term youth unemployment in our area continues to soar.

"Labour's not wait- ing for the election to take action. We have a Youth Jobs Taskforce and are working on a bespoke work progra- mme for Hull, which will target young unemployed."

But Mr Percy told the Mail he would "take no lessons" from Labour when it came to tackling joblessness among young people.

He said: "The reality is that before the Conservatives came to power it was a million and had been going up since 2004.

"The Government is, at last, doing what should have been done a decade ago, investing in apprenticeships, providing grants so young people can set up businesses, and providing dedicated work experience."
