MPs' Seven Seas letter in full: 'Company must support Hull and the Humber in its time of need'
WE ARE deeply concerned that Seven Seas has launched a 90-day consultation with staff, which may result in the company moving its commercial operations to London and the outsourcing of production.
This move could see the loss of 249 jobs in the Humber region.
We welcome the ongoing dialogue with employees, unions and stakeholders but believe that the decision to go has already been taken.
Seven Seas is synonymous with Hull and the region's fishing heritage. Founded 77 years ago by Hull's trawler owners, it has long been a household name, employing generations of people from Hull and the surrounding area.

We are in unprecedented times and the Humber economy faces particularly challenging conditions. The company is blaming a failing economy for its need to outsource production.
However we believe that this move is based on other factors.
The Humber region has huge potential and, with the right support, the regional economy can once again thrive.
Seven Seas' withdrawal from the region would be the wrong decision at the wrong time. It will undermine confidence in the region and damage our economic recovery.
We would urge Seven Seas and its German owners Merck KGaA to stay in Hull and ask them to support Hull and the Humber, as the region has supported them over the years.
Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP, Karl Turner MP, Diana Johnson MP, Nic Dakin MP, Austin Mitchell MP, Rt Hon David Davis MP, Greg Knight MP, Andrew Percy MP, Graham Stuart MP.

“What can be done? Nothing.
Posturing by politicians will have no effect on a German company concerned only with profit.
The 90 day "consultation" is the same as I went through with my colleagues last year before we got shipped out. It is 90 days notice pure and simple.
We were asked to work all overtime for NOTHING,not flat rate, nothing,by the foreign firm that took us over and we all worked so for 12 months. However they had found workers overseas that were even cheaper than us so they got the contracts,we got 90 days and redundancy.
Last time I passed through Sutton Fields the factory was still padlocked and desolate.”

“All seems very shallow and transparent. I'm trying also to hold off the word desperate.
The company intend to outsource production to save costs, something that hasn't really been acknowledged in the media. What can anybody do to stop them?”

“your not seeing the point here that seaven seas arnt selling enough cod liver oil etc. and why is this ? because its too expensive, all the big supermarkets sell there own brand at much cheaper prices. so as the letter puts it even with the right support this will not make people buy their products and save its business. no one can expect the company to keep ploughing money into a business that is clearly not making money. shareholders, owners etc. are in it to make money and not there for the fun of it or to keepit going just because its allways been in Hull.”

“And other than more self publicity for the aforementioned egotists, the impact of this letter will be exactly ? The decision has been made. Move on and tackle other issues.”
