HULL City Official Supporters' Club has written to the region's MPs asking them to back their bid for a safe standing terrace to be trialed at the KC Stadium.

As first revealed in the Mail, the Tigers' owner Ehab Allam has stated he is in favour of a return to standing terraces, provided it is safe.

However, legislation brought in after the Hillsborough disaster of 1989 requires all top-level clubs to provide seating for football crowds.

Now, the fans' club is asking for support from the region's MPs who are also invited to attend a presentation – aimed at dismissing false perceptions of standing terraces – on December 11.

Chris Smith, from the group, said: "We have asked our MPs if they support safe standing terraces and if not, why not?

"We have also asked them to attend, if possible, the presentation by the Football Supporters' Federation."

Meanwhile, the Football Supporters' Federation has provided the Mail with pictures showing examples of safe standing terraces, of the sort used in the German Bundesliga.

So-called "rail seats" can be folded away quickly, creating a standing terrace, say those championing them.

Mr Smith, of Atwick, near Hornsea, said: "Safe standing terraces will give supporters, for the first time in years, a real choice.

"It will also enable Hull City to vary its ticket prices, making attending a football match much more financially viable for fans."

Early Day Motion 573, put forward by Birmingham MP Roger Godsiff and currently going through Parliament, calls for a small-scale trial of safe standing technology.

To support the motion, a presentation will be held at Portcullis House in London, where MPs have their offices.

Mr Smith said: "We want MPs to come along and see what we are proposing for themselves. There will be real benefits for Hull City supporters if a trial was to happen at the KC Stadium.

"We are pleased the club owners have publicly come out and supported the idea."

Jon Darch, spokesman for the Football Supporters' Federation, urged those against safe standing terraces to forget images of hooligans marauding on terraces in the 1970s.

He said: "I can understand why people, particularly those who have not attended a match for a number of years, may be fearful.

"But we are absolutely not talking about a return to the old 1970s-era terraces associated with crowd trouble.

"Rail seating, like that used in the Bundesliga, works perfectly well – and they are safe."

Mr Darch revealed Hull City is one of seven Championship clubs to have publicly stated they would welcome a trial of safe standing terraces.

In the Premier League, Aston Villa and Sunderland have expressed "real interest", said Mr Darch.

George Hudson, Hull City's marketing and media manager, said: "We have put our names in the hat and publicly said we are in favour of safe standing terraces.

"We can only hope other clubs do the same.

"We will await developments."

“I agree that there should be a small area made for those that insist on standing and annoying those that wish to sit. The club and the supporters club should do some properly managed customer surveys to find the numbers involved. I have read somewhere this part of a plan to increase the ground capacity to 30,000. To do that nearly 6,000 seats (ie both ends of the ground) would have to creating over 10,000 standing spaces. I do not believe there is that level of demand.
So yes create a small area at the back / in one of the corners where sight lines for seats would be unaffected, no more than 1,000 and well away from the visiting fans.”

“Why do so many people miss the point that standing will only ever be one small section of the ground and the rest will still be seated ?

If you want to sit thats fine , you can , it's all about choice”

“Another outdated idea from the FSF who believe all fans are the same and just want to eat pies, drink beer and stand at games.

Its never ever going to happen, do you really think we could be promoted to the Premiership and implement standing terraces, i think not.

You may dream of the days when you stood in shabby old grounds with crumbling terraces, but its not going to happen, so just dream of promotion instead.”

“I have always found it hard to sit down and looking at the photo of the Standing Unit, it looks like the ideal containment box for a 69 year old like me....a sort of static Zimmer frame.
I think they should try it out at the next home game.......Fill it up with OAP's.....then lift it up with a fork lift truck....whizz past all the queue's and then position for the best view point.
There is also room for a chemical toilet below it.......UTT!”

“GinJuice.. you are quite right. There should be an area for standing fans. I think if it ever were to be approved the Allams probably would stump up the cash as it makes sense financially to improve crowds and the atmosphere generally.

As for idiots like 'Unified' who think they own the stadium I would just ignore them. They will not be part of the decision making process. It will not affect others at any standing area would not obstruct fans who were seated so this clown is clearly trying to wind people up.

Nice to see a Chairman with some forward thinking ability. Whether it does or doesn't happen it shows that we have astute businessmen at the helm of our club who are prepared to be forward thinking and listen to what the fans want.”

“@ unified - what gives you the right to deny people choice, simply because you 'attend the KC'? I also attend the KC and I stand at City matches and the atmosphere in that section is much better (I have sat in every other stand as well). I also attend the KC and I stand at City matches and the atmosphere in that section is much better (I have sat in every other stand as well). Just because I attend the KC and stand and prefer that, I would never deny anyone else the choice to sit down by demanding all the seats be taken out... if you don't like standing, sit down where the seats are!

@ SnothillBaz - The Allams paid for the card-reading turnstiles, so why not this?”

“This proposal is just a waste of everyone's time and energy. Who would pay for this?
HCC, as the council's owners, will not pay for it, they have no spare cash.
The Allams, as the owner of Hull City, will not pay for it, as it's not his property to change
Adam Pearson, as the owner of Hull FC, will not pay for it, as he does not have enough cash, even if he wanted standing.
And I cannot see the Football League or Rugby League foundations putting any cash into this either.
So it's a dead duck. And I just wasted 5mins keying this in!”

“Of course clubs will be in favour. It will be cheaper in the long run than having seats put in, plus twice as many fans can be crammed in cant they, and whats the betting it wont cost the paying fans much less to have this dubious pleasure of standing rather than sitting. It doesnt make any sense why they want to turn the clock back. If it aint broke, why attempt to fix it.
This method of treating fans as cattle was banned years ago for one good reason. Safety. Even in those days, the standing areas were thought of as safe. That was until bad things happened, and though it was obvious standing contributed to the dangers,it took the clubs so long before they were forced by commissions and inquests to protect the paying fans by having seats fitted. They can spout on this return to the 70s and 80s " safe standing areas" as much as they want but any fan with a sense of self preservation or history ought to literally hold onto their seat for now.
Is it really worth the risk?.”

“problem. I attend KC and do not want standing so why should the MPs push for somwthing without checking what others want.
Hull City Fans do not own the staduim, Hull CC does”
