A man travelling in the rear of the Mondeo was taken to hospital with non-lief threatening chest injuries.

The male driver, 35, was arrested in connection with an assault and also for drink driving.

One east bound lane on Castle Street remained closed to enable recovery of the car and also to allow an electrician to make safe the damaged lamppost.

The lamppost was eventually taken down and the road re-opened at approximately 9.45am.

The accident caused traffic to queue from the Waterhouse Lane junction to the Prince's Dock Street junction and right along to St Andrews Quay during the morning's rush hour.

“This mornings HDM names Simon Green aged 35 yr old as the driver , is this the same Simon Green that received a ten year jail sentence for armed robbery some years ago , please tell us more !”

“Thank you Loubyloo116. I knew I was right but it just proves that our national speed limits are confusing. It would be better if they used 'numbered' speed limit signs rather than the national speed image sign.”

“I'm confused too... how do people manage to get their drivers license when they don't know the speed limits?”

“Chrissie572 is correct on the speed limit being 70 on a dual carriageway. A Dual Carriageway is defined as 'The two directions of traffic flow must be physically separated by a central reservation."

A road where the two directions of flow are separated only by lines painted on the road surface is a single carriageway, regardless of the number of traffic lanes that may be available to the traffic in each direction.

“When are we going to have people know the speed limits. It`s not difficult! The standard of driving knowledge (let alone common sense) is truly appalling. Think we need a review of the standard of instruction. May be time to introduce refresher courses - suspect not many (including me) who were taught ?? years ago just to pass the test, would probably fail miserably second time round and years later.”

“1.it might not be a motorway but it is a dual carriageway and the national speed limit for that is 70mph for a car (not towing).
    2. Too many people stay in the outside lane when there is plenty of room in the inside lane. I have used the inside lane plenty of times because I have a better braking distance and actually pass the cars in the outside lane. It's not my fault that they are going slower when I am not speeding, generally I'm being cautious in this lane as I don't want to undertake but still at 60 it's inevitable.
    3. Hull council have messed up the arterial routes in hull by taking away lanes and giving them to the buses. You only have to look at the congestion on the westbound side of anlaby road and the bus stop at HRI on evening peak traffic. Today the A63, Anlaby road and Hessle road were all gridlocked!
Happy driving, if every driver let one person in/out on their journey I'm sure driving would be easier.”
