The scene of the accident in Chanterlands Avenue this morning.
A witness, who did not want to give his name, described how the man - thought to be in his 50s - appeared to step straight out in front of the bus.
He said: "I saw it all. It was definitely not the bus driver's fault. I was on the bus and just about to get off when it happened. There was nothing the driver could have done about it.

"Two people, who were trained in first-aid, got off the bus and tended to him, while I rang for an ambulance."
Traffic quickly built up, causing tailbacks along Spring Back West, although police quickly set-up diversions.
The bus involved was the 13S Orchard Park service.
Speaking at the scene, PC Steve Lamswood told the Mail: "A pedestrian crossing the road has come in collision with a bus. His injuries are not considered serious. He has been taken to hospital.
"Anyone who witnessed the accident and has not already given us their details is asked to do so by calling us on 101."

Well obviously you have to stick your hand out for a bus to stop. Some people are waiting at stops where more than one bus pass and may only want a certain number so you can't expect the driver to stop at every stop, just in case.
As for not stopping, I have only had one experience of this and it happened to be me at the stop. It was one that had been 'school buses only' but had changed and the bus driver didn't stop. I rang Stagecoach to complain and was told that there is a video in the cab recording everything the drivers do and they would look at it. Later I got an email saying he had been suspended, off pay, for 2 days. Had I known this was going to happen I wouldn't have reported him.
So I doubt very much that drivers sail past people at bus stops on a regular basis, unless the bus is full of course. Ever thought that might be a possibility on 'busy routes'?”

“For as many years as I can remember to stop a bus, when you wish embark said vehicle, the normal practise was to swing your arm out and hope the driver saw you, and thought you worthy of travelling on his "charger"!! If not he would just sail on by, pretending not to have seen you!! Apparently said chargers are more than regular especially on such a "busy" route, there would appear to be no justification for such dramatic stoppage. Unless you have a better way people swing high, swing low, sweet chariot, coming forth to carry us "mortals" home!
If your driving home...don't forget your car!!”

“Yesterday as I was driving my car a group of youths approached the road. It was obvious they were not slowing down and one of them (wearing his 'I'm young, therefore invincible' cloak) ran across the road in front of my car. Luckily I was pulling away from traffic lights and turning a corner so I wasn't going fast but I still had to slow down to avoid ploughing his silly self into the Tarmac.
I didn't give him the satisfaction of a reaction but I wished there was some legal Darwinian law that allowed me to mow him down.”

“Accidents do happen, but I loved the HDM comment, to inflame the incident.... The bus involved was the 13S Orchard Park service. What does that mean? Oh it was an Orchard Park bus do you expect.... for goodness sake”

“You ALL need to be careful including me !
Sad to say Accidents can happen to anyone, at any time.
Even to the most careful people ....
I Hope both the driver and the pedestrian are fine.”

“they are not the best but come on this article is clear not driver error, but then some people
just like to beat up verbally bus drivers,we all know stagecoach hull aren,t the best but there is worse out there .
imagine you are a bus driver you clock on collect your bus start your service dont just drive to end of route its more than that you have the road conditions to watch you have to predict what other driver all around you are going to do try and keep to the company timetable monitor your bus and keep a eye on you passengers and then you have to its seems by some comments be physic and know what every pedestrian is going to do ,smart uniform, good pay, free travel,do you want the job ,i wouldnt, you have to way up the claims of 1001 and still keep the bus moving”

“I seem to remember it being a cyclist. I saw a bike on the road with a cyclist underneath it. I wasn't very close so I can't be sure though. Does anyone agree or was this someone who had stopped to help?”
