Matthew Grove takes office as Humberside police and crime commissioner
Matthew Grove has held his first press conference as Humberside police and crime commissioner.
Mr Grove said he was "absolutely delighted, honoured and hugely relieved" to have been elected to his new role, which offically begins today.
Sitting next to Humberside Police Chief Constable Tim Hollis, Mr Grove said the pair were united by a common interest to protect the people of East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire.
He said: "I really, really want the challenges that lie ahead. I want to represent the people of this area and do everything I can to keep them safe, reduce crime, and reduce the number of victims."

After addressing the media and police officers at a community centre in Grimsby, Mr Grove walked around an estate with members of the local policing team.
Mr Hollis said: "This is an historic day for British policing. We can now start looking to the future and do the best for our communities with the resources available to us."

“In the past the people on the police authority - mainly political appointments - were paid I believe about £10K per annum which for a lot of them meant going to the odd meeting and raising your hand a few times. The new committe I am told receive no pay as they have very restricted powers - I think you will find that the overall cost works out about the same, but of course the structure is very different.
I personally believe that the primary advantage of the new system is in having a full time person doing the job as opposed to a bunch of part timers all arguing with each other about this and that and always struggling to find a concensus position. Any Chief Constable worth his or her salt would run rings round such a group, in particular if the group is appointed by political patronage more as a reward than a job.”

“I am not sure on the costs of the Police Authority, but we were led to believe that this Police & Crime Commissioner was a single person to whom the Chief Constable was held accountable. However, we now see a body appointed above him (led by Colin Inglis) to oversee the work of the PCC. So... essentially, do we not just have another Police Authority?? (But this time, I suspect it will cost a little more, with the PCC earning circa £75,000 - and all for what is effectively a non-job.)”

“Been a lot of talk of the salary this job commands does anybody know what the police authority comitee was paid before been replaced by the commissioner?”

“Kewtsu, so why are you whining about it if you chose not to do it yourself.
What fear of violence is there against you. A lot of policemen have families and don't seem to think it is a problem.
Some people just aren't cut out for the job so maybe you should do something less scary like working in a children's nursery although little tykes can get quite boisterous.↓⺔

“To Dave_Navarro
- I don't know what your trying to say about me, but Grove has said he is going to be big on Specials, he needs to know some issues about training at Humberside Police so he can deal with them ie been told conflicting things on how to do things by trainers.
Err and I was vetting to a very high standard sadly I decided it wasn't for me because fear violence against me was too much when I have a small family.”

“Tosh, a job is a job whether you get paid for it or not and you can't just take anyone on just because they work for free.
Someone in a police uniform if they are paid or not are trusted by the public so need to be vetted adequately.
There was a recent case in the HDM where a PCSO was convicted of indecently assaulting a young boy so the police have to be careful.”

“Groves initial statements have been vacuous and hardly visionary, 'reduce crime' etc”

“There has already been a Tory PCC announce that he (Cllr Lloyd, Herts) will be doing the £75,000 job part time and keeping his district and county seats (and allowances) including chair of the development committee. None of which was mentioned before the election. Conflicts of interest - so what's your position Mr Grove?”

“Dave_Navarro, being a special is not a job, its policing on the cheap and anyone willing to do this thankless work should be applauded.”

“Kewtsu, No one cares about your "issues with training to be a Special with Humberside Police".
Your constant whining on here is good enough reason not to give you the job.”
