They are a guitar-playing four-piece who combine good looks with catchy pop hits.

Boy band McFly are the latest act to be announced for Freedom Festival 2010.

The two-day event takes place across Friday, September 10 and Saturday, September 11.

Diana Vickers, Fyfe Dangerfield and Roll Deep are among the well-known performers already lined-up to sing alongside McFly on the Viking FM Stage at Humber Quays.

McFly are making a comeback with new single Party Girl two years after they split from their record label and decided to go their own way.

Harry, Tom, Dougie and Danny, recently showed off a slick new look by posing naked for a gay magazine.

They are rumoured to have added an R'n'B edge to their music, but fans will be hoping they play some of their previous chart-topping hits.

These include All About You, Obviously and Five Colours in Her Hair.

More announcements about the entertainment lined-up for the Freedom Festival will be made later this week.

This includes the Friday night programming and details of an unusual third stage in Freedom Gardens.

McFly's inclusion follows the news Mercury Prize nominees Foals will headline the Freedom Stage in Queens Gardens, which will be renamed Freedom Gardens for the weekend.

The band will be joined by the Bikini Beach Band, the Warren Acoustic Sessions, Creative Voice, Hot Gospel and the Nyanga Project on the main stage, located at the Hull College end of the gardens.

Councillor John Robinson, Hull City Council portfolio holder for image and culture, said he was delighted Mcfly had been added to the list of acts.

He said: "Freedom aims to cater for a range of tastes as part of its line-up – from pop on the Marina to the eclectic line-up in Freedom Gardens, as well as bringing new cultural experiences to the city and something for all ages.

"We are delighted to have attracted another household name to the festival and hope that McFly will enjoy being part of the Freedom experience in Hull."

Janet Reuben, chief executive of Visit Hull and East Yorkshire, said the weekend would be "unmissable".

She said: "The quality and variety of performances coming to this year's Freedom makes the event truly unmissable.

"The very best in live arts, dance and music will be combining to provide a cultural extravaganza in Hull this September."

There will be two viewing areas for disabled audience members at the festival.

One will be adjacent to Humber Quays One, with views to the stage and the other is located on the east side of the Marina – part of the family viewing area with views of a big screen.

People wishing to sign up to the guest list for the first area should email helen.thackeray@hullcc.gov.uk or call (01482) 613500 as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

There will be one wheelchair space and two companions available per request.

    “Moan moan moan!
People complain the council are spending too much on this festival; people complaint they're spending too little. People complain about a very respectable, indie band (Foals) playing the festival; then they complain about a pop band for the kids (McFly).
From where I'm standing (which is, admittedly quite far away), the festival sounds like quite a nice, free event for the people of Hull and surroundings, and most likely, pretty good value for the taxpayer in terms of the money it will bring to the city. And yet, so many people on here do nothing but moan!
A suggestion: If you really must moan about something; how about trying to say something positive first and then making a suggestion for an improvement. That's a pretty basic social skill which everybody should have learned by the time they are past their teenage years!”

“Freedom Festival much like last year which equates to nothing to do with freedom except the freedom for people to wonder around drinking booze and for a few polticians etc make out they are putting Hull on the map when only Hull people will be there, apart from the so called entertainers, and the worst of them at that!”

“I totally agree with noodle. If they're doing a massive festival like that, then why don't they pay for some decent bands, instead of Mcshite, who are resurfacing again, after a few years out of the charts. It's not as though the council can't afford them, with the amount of money they make on speed scameras and parking tickets. They can ram it.”

“If the Freedom Festival wants to some culture I suggest they get the Mighty Zulu Nation Theatre Company I so these once and they rock!

Mind no doubt too cultured for the likes of Zoe and the other Chavs and Chavettes of Hull.”

“Claire, priiny ave, that's a bit defeatist - Hull chavs need no excuse to get drunk. We need ordinary folk to outnumber the chavs otherwise we might as well all surrender.”

“Once again the organisers have pulled it out of the bag.

The usual dross and brain dead pop acts, most of whom can't even play "live" without a battery of vocal processors and backing tracks, have been selected to peform at this event.

Despite my own personal feelings about these bands, none of these acts have any relevance when you take into account what the freedom festival is all about. Where are the African, Asian and other ethnic performers, bands and artists?

Where are the acts who will perform material which highlights the problems slavery and other ethnic and social injustices caused, at the time of William Wilberforce, and, I might add, in these modern times.

Without these, the festival becomes a poor excuse for a pop concert. A tour of Wilberforce House, is not the only way to learn about these issues.

We need someone to bring these issues and stories to life through, art, music, and any other expressive art form, rather than a bunch of talentless kids turning up for easy money.”
