Hull City to offer Paul McShane new deal, regardless of whether they win promotion
PAUL McShane will be offered a contract extension to remain at the KC Stadium – regardless of the division Hull City find themselves in next season.
After two years in the City wilderness pointed towards an eventual parting this summer, the 27-year-old has enjoyed a stirring rebirth with the Tigers this term.

Hull City's Paul McShane has established himself as a fans' favourite
Twenty starts have established McShane as a firm fans' favourite and he will head to former loan club Brighton tonight as a regular fixture in Steve Bruce's three-man defence.
Like several first-team stars at the KC, including Jay Simpson, Seyi Olofinjana and Liam Rosenior, McShane will see his current deal expire this summer.

But with a nod to the defender's undeniable form, Bruce has vowed to offer the Republic of Ireland international a fresh contract once City's fate becomes clear.
"There will be a contract there for him certainly," Bruce told the Mail.
"Hopefully, that's in the big league but even if we don't I'm sure there will still be some sort of contract offer there for him in the Championship.
"He's shown how much he wants to play regular football here and he's not let anyone down."
The stumbling block standing between McShane and a new deal will be the terms he currently enjoys.
A permanent move from Sunderland in the summer of 2009 saw the defender sign a four-year deal worth a reported £18,000 a week and he would need to take a significant pay cut to remain in East Yorkshire, if the Tigers were to miss out on promotion.
"I've had a word with Paul already and he understands that it's a difficult situation," Bruce explained.
"He's still one of the high earners from the Premier League so you can't really start negotiations until you know what league we're going to be in. If we were to get in the Premier League next season then it's not a problem to give him the salary he's earning again.
"If we don't make it, then that salary is not something we'd be able to offer. I've explained all that to him and he understands."
Bruce's encouraging words are a measure of McShane's resurrection in the last six months.
Surplus to requirements in the majority of the last two seasons, loan spells with Barnsley and Crystal Palace offered the only opportunity for regular football.
A first City start for nine months came in the 3-2 loss to Blackpool in October and he has grasped the nettle to become an integral part of the Tigers' promotion bid.
His form has won acclaim on the terraces and he will assured of a warm reception when he returns to Brighton this evening.
As a 19-year-old McShane spent the 2005-06 season on loan with the Seagulls from Manchester United, winning the Player of the Year prize in his breakthrough campaign.
Much has changed for Brighton since their time at the Withdean Stadium and so too for McShane, according to Bruce.
"I'm so pleased for him as an individual that it's come around for him again here," he said. "He's had some dark, dark times, that's been clear when I've spoken with him, so I'm delighted to see his turnaround. We're seeing him really starting to mature now.
"It's not a case where he feels like he has to fight the world anymore. That was always my concern with Paul.
"He'll give you every last thing he's got and he's a wonderful competitor, but hopefully there's a trust between us now. I hope that trust is there now because I've got an awful lot of time for him."

“I like McShane's effort, but at Premiership level I doubt his ability.
Keep him if we're in the Championship next season but with a major (greater than 50%) pay cut.
We'll need Chestereque quality across the back three/four if we go up!”

“I'm a huge fan of Macca's attitude, and playing in a back three seems to really suit him. However, I'm not sure I'd offer him a new deal if we go up, but definitely would if we don't - but only on reduced terms.”

“Love Bruce's comments about McShane. Really nice to hear (and accurate).
Consistent performer this season, hope he & Rosenior get new deals.
Though with Macca, I hope it's on reduced terms...”

“killer127,
You commented that Steve Bruce, wiped the slate clean, and threw down a gauntlet, Macca picked it up and has been a different player this season, well that was after he tripped over it and hit is head trying to pick it up.
Mark my words this over rated clown will trip up again and more than likely be responsible for the Tigers conceding a hat full of goals that will cost them a place in the top flight.
I want someone that is consistent and dependable week in and week out, Paul McShane is neither, but a disaster just waiting to happen.”

“As others have said, Steve Bruce, wiped the slate clean, and threw down a gauntlet, Macca picked it up and has been a different player this season, he is still relatively young (27) and learning all the time, those questioning his pace, you dont need it if you read the game correctly, Look at Terry, Ferdinand and Carragher, non are blessed with pace, but you wouldnt question their quality, I am not saying he is as good as them, but he is coping well in young and often changing defence. He deserves a new contract, as does Liam Rosenior, Oli should be released and Simpson, despite putting in lots of effort, is never going to get enough goals, god knows he had had enough chances, in one of the most creative City sides in living memory, if he cant do it at this level he has no chance in the Premiership.”

“Salwatiger. It is inevitable that any thread containing the name 'Paul McShane' will provoke differing opinion,it's the nature of the beast I'm afraid and let's face it..one mans meat is another mans poison(not sure if we should be mentioning meat, horse or beef!!!LOL)
I too cottoned onto the fact that McShane has performed a lot better at Centre-Half than he ever did,or will,at right back.Skill levels are far less demanding in his current role as opposed to his previous one.McShane's a big lad and has little problem getting his bonce on high balls but he lacks in composure on the ball.
Take Chester or Alex Bruce (both flexible and comfortable on the ball) and you can see why McShane is slightly down the pecking order when it comes to being selected on a regular basis.
He's certainly earned the right to a possible renewal of his contract and as sport-trader says Bullard he most certainly isn't,as an aside,I was led to believe his salary was in the region of 23k.”

“Sorry guys, I respect Maccas efforts this year but in the Prem League he will be ripped a new one- he's nowhere near good enough in that league whether he is played in the middle or right back. Fair play to the lad this year for the way he's managed to cut out most of the mistakes but he is still slow as a slug. When we went up we had Wayne Brown, did the job our league, nowhere near top flight standard.”

“Macca is a total triumph over adversity!
That may sound strange when he earns reported £26k, not £18k HDM, per week, but he has been the consummate professional throughout his time with us. Never once have I heard that he's unhappy about being dropped or farmed out to the likes of Barnsley, he's just got his head down and got on with it, and now we are seeing the benefit as he comes into his footballing prime.
The days when he would have a rush of blood are seemingly in the past, and he has never, and never will, given less than 100% effort. The fact that Steve Bruce was happy to let him go at Sunderland, but is more than happy to give him a new contract now. whether in the PL or not, speaks volumes for the player that he's become.
Give me a Macca over a Bullard EVERY day of the week!”

“Totally ignoring Peterkins11, I think some are missing the point here, Macca in the prem was mainly played at right back, he was totally out of his depth playing there, also he had Mendy playing in front of him so didn't get the kind of cover he needed, as Mendy wasn't renound for tracking back. Granted he was sometimes diabolical in games but others such as Liverpool 2-2 he was exceptional. Cut the lad some slack, he has been a revelation this season, not playing at right back but as centre half which IMO is his prefered position.
UTT.”
