THE communities minister is visiting Hull today to see two projects that are using the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to boost the local economy and create jobs.

Baroness Hanham will visit Spencer Group to announce an ERDF award for its £100m-plus Hull Energy Works scheme in Cleveland Street before heading to the Marfleet Environmental Industries Park in Hedon Road.

The £13m Marfleet business park, which has been developed by Warmsale on the former Humbrol factory site, has already received £4.7m of ERDF cash and its first tenants, Nippon Gohsei and Neill & Brown Global Logistics, have been operating there since 2011.

The Mail understands the minister will be announcing a grant worth millions of pounds for Spencer's Energy Works scheme, which will use an innovative combination of green technologies to release energy from locally sourced waste materials.

Spencer Group chief executive Charlie Spencer said: "We're delighted Energy Works is being supported by the European Commission and the UK Government and we're looking forward to briefing the minister about the many benefits it brings.

"This will be an investment of more than £100m by a Hull-based company here in Hull. It will also be another major contribution to Hull and the Humber becoming established as the leading area in the UK for green energy."
