MoD: Wind turbine will interfere with radar
DEFENCE chiefs have added their voices to growing protests against a new wind turbine in a beauty spot.
Proposals have been unveiled for a turbine measuring almost 70m in the village of Rudston, near Bridlington.

It would be close to the UK's tallest standing prehistoric monolith and visible from the house where East Riding author Winifred Holtby grew up.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the turbine would compromise air surveillance in the area.

In a letter to the planning office at East Riding Council, the MoD said: "The turbine will be 11.4km from, detectable by and will cause unacceptable interference to the radar at RAF Staxton Wold.
"Trials carried out in 2005 concluded wind turbines can have detrimental effects on the operation of radar which include the desensitisation of radar in the vicinity of the turbines and the creation of 'false' aircraft returns.
"The probability of the radar detecting aircraft flying over or in the vicinity of the turbines would be reduced and the RAF would be unable to provide a full air surveillance service in the area."
The MoD said the problem could be overcome if developers installed flashing infrared lights at the top of the generator.
Walkers and the Bridlington Civic Society have also raised concerns.
Peter Ayling, of the Ramblers' Association, told planners the turbine would damage the area's beauty and blight views of "the village of Rudston and its unique standing stone".
And the Civic Society is concerned the turbine could smooth the way for more applications in the East Yorkshire countryside.
Group secretary Maureen Bell said wind turbines are creating "an industrial landscape that circles Bridlington like a collar".
She said: "It seems such a shame this very beautiful landscape is now almost an industrial landscape.
"The turbine would make an extremely big difference. It would be as visible for miles around as the turbines at Lissett are.
"We would like to think of ourselves as a green society but we're not wholly convinced of the efficacy of turbines."
Rudston Parish Council objects and more than 100 homeowners have written to planners with their views.
Lady Juliet MacDonald lives in Thorpe Hall stately home and runs a campsite on her land. She said: "Wind turbines above 20m in height should not be built around Rudston village.
"The application site is far too close to the centre of the village."
English Heritage has yet to submit its views on the turbine plans.

“Turn off the radar then! Paranoia in action... ...The Russians are coming!!!
What an utter waste of money in a modern world...”

“If all of these ruddy faced country bumpkin types dont like wind turbines then the powers that be should build a nice clean and efficient nuclear power station in one of their empty fields. That would stop them from going on about it like a bunch of sissys.”

“As applicants can appeal to the Government to reverse local decisions we need to get it onside, as well as councils and others, if we are going to stop these wind turbines being built.
Are you disillusioned by rising electricity prices, over dependence on the "green" dream [especially uneconomical and inefficient wind farms] and the destruction of our countryside then please object to the Government at

or by GOOGLING "E-PETITION 22958" and following the link.
Please pass this message on to Councillors, friends, neighbours and anyone else you know to persuade them to sign up too. If you are really concerned about wind turbines please write a letter promoting this petition to your local Newsletter and to the Editors of your local newspapers.”

“Simply disconnect Rudston from the electicity supply and see how long the objections persist.”

“No A plot to make thousands of farmers rich by putting overrsized Commercial turbines on the most precious landscapes in our country, paying for their subsidies through our electricity bills and making milloions into fuel poverrty with machines that are totally inefficient yet Industrialise our rural areas. The OD clearly recognise the threat to their operations too -after seeing smaller ones approved they are now faced with a deluge of 47 metre plus Turbines on highly elevated land.Renewable energy targets for East Riding were met in 2009 ..what excuse !!
The portfolio holder for planning at East Riding should be ashamed that so many are being passed-when they have a polic do***nent Planning For Renewables which says the Yorkshire Wolds is not the place for them and what has he done to get AONB Status for the Wolds..
There's a new Bob Dylan song "Where did all the Stewardship Grants go..long time passing..
Where did all our vistas go,long time ago.....
Where did all the subsidies go..
Into farmers pockets every one...
When will we ever learn, when will we ever learn..”

“Have we stumbled across a plot to infest the British landscape with thousands of wind turbines, thus rendering us vulnerable to surprise aerial attack?”

“If you read the Actual letter of objection on the ERYC Planning Website.ERYC Public Access
It does not say Flashing lights can solve this.
It says there is a major problem with radar interference and that the applicants will have to see if they can overcome this problem with their proposal which as it stands has a strong MOD objection on radar interference.
In addition there is an impact on RAF operations in the area and tall Turbines always have a condition that if approved a red flashing light would have to warn flying aircraft.
How appropriate -NOT for this sacred landscape !!!!!!!!!!”

So, stick a flashing light on top of the generator then.”

“How on earth could a flashing infrared light stop their radar from being interfered with??
