Work is set to begin on a major scheme to improve flood defences near Market Weighton.

Environment Agency contractors are due to start the £3m upgrade that will improve safety at Mill Beck, upstream of the town centre.

The beck flows into the town through an area known as Monkey Run, where a disused railway embankment contains the water at times of heavy rainfall.

The development will take water from the embankment via a new concrete spillway, returning the water to Mill Beck further downstream.

The spillway channel will be excavated across the width of the embankment, with a reinforced spill weir built at the upstream end of the channel.

During the work, which is scheduled to last for seven months, there will be temporary diversions to footpaths and bridleways. Sewers and underground pipelines will also be diverted.
