A MORRIS group has something to make a song and dance about after winning a prestigious award.

The Avenues-based Rackaback is still in its infancy but has already won the coveted Gordon Crowther Memorial Staff.

The award is given to a group which embraces the "spirit of the dance" and is well-known in Morris dancing circles.

Now the team, which rehearses at St Ninian's and St Andrew's Church in Chanterlands Avenue, are looking for more recruits to add to their merry band and help further promote themselves.

Squire Jamie Sage said: "If you travel in Morris circles it is something everyone is very familiar with.

"It is a great achievement to get but probably even more so because we have only been going for a year-and-a-half.

"It is a sign that we aren't just messing about – we have achieved something people can recognise. It gives us confidence as a team."

Rackaback formed in January last year and meets each Tuesday from 7.30pm.

It was founded by a group of friends in the Avenues and now has between 15 and 20 regulars.

It is made up of dancers, musicians and a few people who do both. But the team are a far cry from the stereotypical Morris image of beards and bells.

Pippa King, 43, who was one of the founder members, says the group is a Border Morris team, which is characterised by tattered jacket, bells, blacked faces and stick dances.

Ms King said: "People think it is just a bunch of old men but it isn't. I do 5K when I go to the gym but when I tried dancing it was hard work."
