A WOMAN who claims to have found a three-inch drill part in a loaf of bread is furious after being offered 47p compensation.

Chantal Bray bought the bread from Sainsbury's, in Greenwood Avenue.

Her daughter Charlotte made herself a cheese and ham toasted sandwich that evening and suffered a stomach upset.

It was only the next morning that Charlotte, 20, realised what the bread contained.

She said: "I got some bread out to make egg on toast for my boyfriend and then I noticed brown spots all over it.

"I dropped it because I thought it was covered in flies or something."

A closer look at the Sainsbury's Basics loaf revealed the rusty end of a drill, she said.

"It's probably a good job I noticed it in time," Charlotte said.

When the family called to complain, they were asked to return the bread – and offered a 47p refund.

"It's not acceptable," said Chantal, 38.

"Sainsbury's has got such a reputation. Food is expensive enough as it is and a drill bit should not be found in a loaf of bread."

Charlotte, who lives with her mum in Palmcourt, north Hull, said she was badly sick after eating the bread.

She said: "It was as if Sainsbury's wasn't bothered.

"They talk about customer care, but they obviously didn't take my customer care into consideration."

The supermarket said the Brays might receive more compensation later.

A spokeswoman said: "It is really important to us to make sure everything we sell is safe and we set the highest standards to ensure that this is the case.

"We have apologised to Miss Bray and have asked that she returns the bread to us so we can carry out a full investigation and offer further compensation, in addition to the initial refund."

“Obviously this is some strange definition of the word 'inch' I wasn't familiar with.

If that's three inches long I must have an eighteen inch... I've said too much.”
