A CITY dentist spent a freezing night in his car to make sure he didn't miss his place in a major motocross event.

Nick Allday trained all year for Le Touquet Enduropale in northern France and braved temperatures of minus five degrees Celsius after bad weather set in.

More than 1,000 motocross riders took part in the gruelling annual endurance race, which takes place on a beach.

The winner is the person who can complete the most laps, each measuring 15.5km, in the three-hour time limit.

Nick, owner of manor Dental Health in Willerby Road, west Hull, finished in 773rd place during the event earlier this month and hopes to take part again next year.

He said: "I was staying near Calais and I saw the weather forecast come in.

"It looked quite bad snow-wise and I didn't want to risk not being able to get there, so I slept in the car under a sleeping bag and a bit of carpet.

"I had my mind set on doing it and there was no way I wasn't going to do it.

"I want to be in the top 500 next year and use it as an opportunity to raise money for charity."

Nick, 46, has enjoyed motorcycling for 20 years, as well as kitesurfing, and took up motocross about three years ago.

He trained in Doncaster and France during long weekends.

Nick, of Bishop Burton, said: "For me, the best thing is I can't think about anything else apart from what I'm doing.

"For three hours, it's total concentration.

"I was exhausted and dehydrated by the end. But I have been on a high since I got back."

“Nice to hear about someone doing something different. Give him time and he will be in the top ten. He has a top ten smile. Well done Nick!”

“He would probably have been warmer if he had slept in a sleeping bag rather than 'under' it.

He must be quite the racer placing 773 out of 1000, his family must be very proud.”
