Jim Carrey has signed on for a pivotal role in the comic book movie sequel Kick-Ass 2.

The star will play Colonel Stripes, a former Mafia enforcer turned would-be superhero in the movie that again follows the exploits of teenager Dave Lizewski, who fights crime at night.

Former Python and ex-person Graham Chapman is to be given the animated treatment when his memoirs, A Liar's Autobiography, gets a cartoon adaptation.

Described by Chapman himself in the promotional material as: "The best movie I've been in since I died", the film will include a lot of nonsense and people being silly, in cartoon form. The film will be released next year.

Tolkien-lovers have been perched eagerly on the edge of their seats since director Peter Jackson announced his forthcoming duo of Hobbit films is to expand into a trilogy.

This week, the New Zealand filmmaker has revealed the title of the third film will be The Desolation Of Smaug – although technically it will be the second film of the three, book- marked on either side by An Unexpected Journey, which will be released this Christmas and There And Back Again, due for release in 2014.

Michael Fassbender has been bagged for his first comedy role as an OTT rock star in Frank.

The film will follow the misadventures of an aspiring young musician who gets more than he bargains for when he joins Fassbender's band.
