A LORRY driver whose vehicle overturned on one of Hull's busiest routes has been praised for his quick-thinking.

As first reported on this website, the lorry laden with 26-tonnes of wood flipped on Hedon Road, east Hull, during morning rush hour last Friday.

It is believed a blue Vauxhall Corsa pulled out onto the roundabout at Marfleet Lane, cutting up the truck, and forcing him to slam on his brakes.

After braking sharply, and narrowly avoiding the hatchback, the lorry flipped and crashed onto a cycle path.

Miraculously, no one was seriously hurt in the accident.

But Martin Roberts, transport manager of Beverley-based haulage firm Musgrave's, believes only the fast reactions of his driver averted tragedy.

The unnamed driver had been making a delivering to Willerby Caravans.

Mr Roberts said: "The driver of the Corsa would have been killed if our driver had not taken the action of slamming on the brakes.

"It was reckless driving on the part of the car driver which caused this accident.

"The load was secured, so well in fact that after the crash it was still well attached. The driver did everything right."

Detectives have asked motorists to help identify the driver of the Corsa.

A police spokesman said: "We are trying to trace a the occupants of a small blue car which was in the area at the time of the incident or anyone else who may have witnessed the circumstance leading to the vehicle overturning."

As a result of the accident, the eastbound carriage of the road was closed until 4pm while the majority of the vehicle's load was cleared.

The latest accident happened exactly a week after 54-year-old cyclist Susan Russell, of east Hull, was killed when a lorry carrying a trailer shed its load just two miles further down the road.

The crashes have sparked calls for an urgent safety review of the stretch of carriageway between Garrison Road and Saltend, which incorporates the new Hedon Road.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Humberside Police on 0845 6060222.

“Poor Mr Roberts. I bet he needed a quick dose of Fantasy Football and a rendition of 'call on me' by Eric Prydz (including the video of course) to get over this stressfull time. I heard he dropped a £1 coin and is still looking for it now! MY MATE”

“I must be a hero too, i was driving my car along the road today and as i got to the roundabout on Hedon road someone pulled out of their driveway 2 miles away, i slammed on my brakes, and saved his life, the way he pulled out of his drive way was reckless. police are looking for a red noddy car possibly seen maybe leaving his driveway. Shame i am writing this from intensive car, as my car slid along on its side and it took firemen 2 hours to free me. But at least I saved noddys life. My boss thinks i am a hero too,”

“This must make me some sort of hero then? Today whilst traveling west on Hedon Rd, I applied my brakes and stopped in the middle of the Southcoates Ln roundabout on Hedon Rd, I was riding behind a car (who I thought was a tad reckless for proceeding to turn onto Southcoates Ln despite the fact a driver in an articulated lorry simply got bored and pulled out into the flow of traffic as he exited old Hedon Rd) I, (being the hero I seem to be?) stopped my motorcycle (placing myself at no small risk) and saved the lorry drivers life by not driving into the front wheel of his cab. When are these "knights? of the road going to stop putting everyone else's lives at risk and realise that it is they who do the majority of this "pulling out in front of other road users"? How easy is it to forget about that forty foot trailer? Lets not come to the usual "knee jerk" conclusion that speed was the issue here? the lorry was stationary, it,s time for some old fashioned policing here and at most traffic lights. These people are playing games that put other road users lives at risk, lets stop it, please.”

“Here we go again, so called professional drivers, not my fault blah blah blah, read the Highway Code, Section 160 onwards regarding roundabouts.
And to top it all the Boss says its ok, you wont say that mate when its one of your family!”

“Well done HDM on getting the road wrong. It's Marfleet Avenue not Lane.
It also didn't really land on the cycle path, only the first foot of it, it goes behind the brick wall.”

“@Mac, how can you "forward plan" on a roundabout or junction where you cannot see all of the approach roads? Utter rubbish. If that's how you drive, let me know when you are next round here so I can stay clear of the roads. The drivers tacho may read 15 miles an hour - but he still didnt have time to react because 15 miles an hour didnt allow him to stop his 26 ton load without toppling over.”

“Mac, not sure the police have let him off, if he is to be summonsed to court it will only be after the police have carried out a full investigation. And how can anybody mention anything about the taco, only the company and the police will have access, and they won't go public with it. And you may say he is in the clear, but the police most definitely have not, as i say, the summons may come later. As for speed, that can be a factor even if not excessive for the limit on the road, its whether the speed is correct for the conditions at that time, ie you would not drive at 70 on a motorway in thick fog or if its very icy. And most on here still think its odd how a lorry driving normally for the road conditons and layout can tip over for as the manager says it, 'slamming on his brakes. Mac, it is not definite the lorry driver is in the clear, as i say, any summons may follow later, IF the investigation concludes it should. And Mac, thought you were off to bed, is that because your a night driver, if so i hope your not spending all day on the computer, and not getting enough sleep, it would be awful if you drove whilst tired you know. Lorries could tip over that way.”
