The event gets under way on September 13 from the Humber, the first time a global yacht race has started from the east coast.
As the home boat, all eyes will be on the Hull and Humber Clipper as she battles it out against nine other internationally sponsored yachts.
Piers said it is a huge honour to be chosen to be one of the skippers.
He said: "To be entrusted with the task of skippering Hull and Humber is a great honour.
"Our team has a really strong sponsor, with a great programme and I'm proud to have been chosen to lead the team around the world.
"I'm looking forward to drumming up a lot of support for the boat and meeting my crew.
"I'm sure they'll be as excited as I am to represent the region of Hull and Humber around the world."
Piers was first introduced to sailing at the age of six by his parents and would regularly sail with his father on a range of dinghies and yachts belongin g to the Royal Engineers Yacht Club.
Since his early beginnings sailing in Germany, Piers has now accumulated a wealth of sailing experience on a variety of yachts.
Most recently he has been working on his Open 650 Thunder, one of a class of 21-foot racing yachts which regularly compete in the prestigious Mini Transat Race.
Founded in 1996 by legendary yachtsman Sir Robin-Knox-Johnston, the clipper race enables ordinary people from all walks of life to put their normal lives on hold and do something truly extraordinary.
Sir Robin said: "Leading a team in a race around the world is one of the hardest and most challenging jobs that any skipper could ever undertake and we're confident Piers and his nine colleagues are up to this challenge."

“Peter you are so sad !
Do you feel it necessary to comment on something you know nothing about ?
Are you jealous because the scheme wasn't around when you would have been eligible , because perhaps then it would stop you coming on HDM and giving negative feedback about something that is actually a positive for a change
Good luck to Piers and his crew ... Lets have some loyal support for once :)”

“To Peter and all those of a similar mind. The 09-10 Clipper round the world yacht race has nothing whatsoever to do with the NHS Hull yacht project. They are to separate entites”
