HULL: A long-awaited £7m footbridge over the River Hull meant to open last year is now set to open next month after more delays.

Councillor Martin Mancey, portfolio holder for transport at Hull City Council, said: "There have been anticipated opening dates in the past which have come and gone and we can only keep our fingers crossed that this time it will be opened – but until such time I can't say I am 100 per cent confident."

The crossing will link the east bank of the river to the Old Town at Scale Lane.

It works like a flipper on a pinball machine, swiveling on a turnable mechanism on the west bank of the river, and is designed to carry up to 750 people every time it opens to let vessels use the river.

“It's nothing more than a legacy left by Yorkshire Forward highlighting how they squandered government funding on questionable projects.”

“Can someone from the council answer one very simple fundamental question...... With an existing footbridge a few hundred metres away outside the Deep, Why the need for this one?”

“£7 MILLION? For a footbridge? That could have built quite a few council houses. Whata bizarre priority.”

“Wasn't the bridge only agreed upon when the hotel (Premier Inn??) was being looked in to? Something about them not building an iconic hotel in the city unless there was good pedestrian access to the city centre from that location?

There'll always be other things people want this kind of money spending on and I'm no different but with the whole redevelopment of the East bank this bridge will enhance the look and feel of the area.

Oh and it is true that ANYONE can become a councillor and have a say on these matters, some do and make these decisions, some don't and post on the HDM website moaning!”

“That's 2 Strangley, 3 left. A lot of people say the Humber Bridge and the M62, but for those people, neither of them come to Hull. I could name 3 more but that would be just putting Hull down and I don't do that!”

    “Mikeinhull
What a liar you are, you call yourself 'MIKE IN HULL' not from Hull and say don't 'WE' have another bridge, you hate Hull yet log on to HDM webpage from London, strange one that, and then go on to say somewhere nice to live like London, why didn't you say, like where I live in London, FYI I spent 12 yrs in London living in Charlton and that was a mess, then going north through the Blackwall Tunnel to Tower Hamlets on the East India Dock Road is even worse, So enjoy your little fantasy, I bet your a hoot to live next door to on Orchard Park.”
