HULL: Proposals have been unveiled for a new sculpture to stand next to the existing Merchant Navy memorial in Queens Dock Avenue, city centre.

The existing memorial next to the city's Maritime Museum features a ship's anchor and propeller.

If given the go-ahead, the new steel sculpture proposed by the Merchant Navy Association will mirror the shape of a ship's bow and will be illuminated at night with LED lighting.

A planning application for the scheme also proposed new tree planting in the area around the two memorials.

“My dad who dies in April was in the Merchant Navy for 30 years. I will always remain so proud of him - both for being my dad and for being a Merchant Seaman. I do hope this is given the go ahead - it will be a fitting tribute to my dad and all the other men of the Merchant Navy.”

“Great idea, brave men who kept us fed and worked under horrendous conditions. I'd donate a little if there was a link?”

“I think it is a fantastic idea Merchant Seamen did a lot of work in the Falklands as well as both world wars and should rightly be honoured.”

“It is right and fitting that such a memorial is planned to the men of the merchant services. A much more appropriate statue than the one in the interchange of a so called poet which greets travellers to the city. A person who did very little but winge about a city which paid his wages.”

“This would enhance the previous memorial to the Brave Merchant Seamen and associated maritime organisations of 2 world wars and other conflicts of this maritime city of Hull.
Little is known to the public of Hull of this present site so to highlight it with another tribute would be most welcome to all concerned.”
