THERE was a full house for The Legendary Night Owls gig.

The band's great reputation as an electric Chicago blues band had preceded it and there wasn't a spare seat in the place.

In a fast-paced session lasting over two hours, the band played two original pieces written by Ken Mayle and arranged by the band, Can't See Where I'm Going and Lead Me By The Hand.

The list included Duffy Power's Little Boy Blue, Memphis Slim's Mother Earth, Ray Charles' Unchain My Heart and Got My Mojo Working, popularised in the late 1950s by McKinley Morganfield – Muddy Waters' real name – and subject to quite a copyright dispute.

With Ken Mayle's vocals and blues harp, Dave Tomlinson on piano and Hammond organ, John Newby on guitar, backed by Andy Dalton on bass and Howard Goy on drums, the band wasn't allowed to leave at the end of the evening by the cheering and hooting audience until they'd played several encores, including John Mayall's relentless A Hard Road.

This Saturday sees the return of Brian Boles on trumpet and flugelhorn as he leads the resident Queen Street Band in its regular weekly Saturday evening of Dixieland-style jazz. Tickets are £7 from Off The Beaten Tracks, in Aswell Street, Louth, on 01507 607677.
