Official switch-on at church after long-running campaign

HULL: A long-running campaign to illumi- nate Holy Trinity Church in the Old Town has been completed with an official switch-on.

The idea of floodlights was first suggested in 2010 by Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu.

Hull Bid city centre manager Kathryn Shillito worked on the idea with vicar Rev Dr Neal Barnes.

She said: "The project has taken a long time but I'm sure all involved would agree it's been a worthwhile effort.

"There was a point when it looked as though we might have to carry out disruptive works to install the cabling, but by working with our partners we found another solution and the effect is stunning.

"It has transformed the view of the western façade."

Danny Brown, Lord Mayor of Hull, said: "I am delighted the church is now being shown off to its full potential with the installation of the floodlights."

There was more good news for the church as Rev Barnes became a Canon at York Minster yesterday.

The title is given to clergymen who are members of a cathedral.

It puts them among the "big guns" of the Church of England.
