Oscar Pistorius prosecutors outline case at bail hearing

Details of the murder case against Oscar Pistorius will today be laid out before a South African court, in the second day of the athlete's bail hearing.

Pistorius, known as the Blade Runner, is accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home in Pretoria, South Africa, last Thursday.

The magistrate has deemed this a schedule six case - meaning Pistorius is accused of premeditated murder.

Prosecutors are today expected to highlight reports neighbours had heard loud arguments in his home before he shot his girlfriend.

Pistorius, 26, yesterday told the court in Pretoria he shot Steenkamp through a bathroom door after mistaking her for an intruder. He denies murder.

Investigator Hilton Botha this morning said he opposed the granting of bail. "The accused could be a flight risk. It's a serious crime, a serious matter," he said.

Reference was made to off-shore accounts.

A full trial of the Paralympic star is not expected for months.

Botha has this morning described the moment he arrived at the athlete's house in the early hours of the morning and found Miss Steenkamp's body lying on the ground floor.

She was dressed in white shorts and a black top, and covered in towels, he said.

The officer told the court he saw a firearm on the shower mat, and bullet cartridges in the passageway and the bathroom.

Botha also explained the toilet in the athlete's home is to the left in the toilet room. He says the bullets were fired diagonally through the door.

But Steenkamp's injuries were on her right side. Botha says this indicates she was standing "hiding" on the right-hand-side of the toilet room – and was not sitting on the toilet.

There were three entrance wounds on Steenkamp's body: one on the right side of her head above her ear, one in her right arm, which broke her arm, and one at her hip, Botha said.

In a statement read out in court yesterday by his lawyer Barry Roux Pistorius, who denies murder, said: "I had no intention to kill my girlfriend."

Pistorius said on the night of the shooting he awoke to a sound in the bathroom believing it was an intruder and felt a sense of terror.

He said he didn't realise Steenkamp was not in bed and shot at the door, feeling vulnerable without his prosthetics.

He said he used a cricket bat to break open the bathroom door where she was slumped over the toilet.

He said she was still alive and called the paramedics before she died in his arms.
