ALTHOUGH she stepped down as a councillor in the early 1990s, Frances Brady maintained her interest in politics.

In March last year, she attended an exhibition at Hull History Centre charting the story of women councill- ors in Yorkshire.

At the time, she said she entered politics with the aim of helping people.

She said: "I bec- ame a councillor in 1964 and was very passionate about housing and education.

"I was involved in a lot of demolition work in the Hessle Road area and the slums. I wanted to improve the quality of housing.

"There would often be a family of ten living in a two-bedroom house and lots of outdoor toilets.

"Men on the council in those days didn't realise a woman's attention to detail."
